TIRE PLACE.
Patented Jan.21,1890.
Wiinesses. WMJM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COWLES MEAD MOMAHEN, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
FIRE-PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,704, dated January 21, 1890. Application filed March 29, 1889- Serial N 0. 305,277. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may 0077106772.
Be it known that I, COWLES MEAD MoMA-' HEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Places and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referenoe being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 1
The object of my invention is to make a fire-place in which the fuel will be so consumed that Very little heat will escape up the chimney, but a maximum thereof be radiated into the room.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation showing the detachable fire-place with the grate closed, asin summer time; Fig. 2, afront elevation, and Fig. 3 a vertical section, of fireplace and chimney.
In the drawings, P represents the chimney, to which are secured the jambs B B, whose upper portion is provided with the outwardlyprojecting flanges Q to form a cap, to which is pivoted the transverse plate L, the latter being adjust-able across the throat of the chimney, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. This plate serves as a damper to regulate the draft and as a heat-deflector, and by its arrange ment compels the current of air to all come through the grate. The damper is regulated by handle E and holes G.
A is the fire-box, preferably made ofcastiron and provided with an ash-pan O. The latter is rearwardly held in position by the crank-shaft H, as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings, while the latch D holds it to the upper bar of the grate M, so as to preventany soot or ashes from falling or being blown down the chimney and into the room.
0 is the throat of the chimney.
J represents a boiler or water-heater which has trunnions whose bearings K are in the jambs B B, the said boiler being provided with an inlet on top and an outlet faucet near the bottom.
I is a tea-pot holder pivoted to swing horizontally over the fireor to the outside of the grate.
N is the pivot-rod of the damper L, and F a lug which projects from the rear of jambs B and through a slot at on the sides of the back A. This lug hooks up at the end,so as to hold the back A securely to the jambs. The lower part of back A drops in behind two lugs S S,near the bottom of the jambs, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thus securing the bottom of the back to the jambs.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. The fire-placejambsB B, having the bearings K K, in combination with a trunnioned boiler, as shown and described.
2. The back A and j ambs B, secured together by means of the jamb-lugs F S and back slot a, as shown and described.
I11 testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OOWLES MEAD MoMAIlEN. lVitnesses:
W. L. HOWARD, O. W. HICKMAN.
