Description
A. J. SPRAGUE.
Portable Fireplace.
No. 87,884. Patented March 16, 1869.
N. PETERS, Photo-Lithographer, Washingio n, D C
ALVAH J, SPRAGUE, OF SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI. Letters Patent No. 87 ,884, dated Ma/rch 16, 1869.
PORTABLE FIRE-PLACE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent making part of the lame.
To all whom; it may canoe/m Be it known that I, ALvAH J. SPRAGUE, of Springfield, Greene county, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fire- Places; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the V bers, and an opening, with flanges, for connecting the throat of the fire-place with the flue.
A represents the base, having a hearth and ash-box constructed in the usual manner.
Front plate B, side plates O G, and back plate D, are joined together by proper flanges and rabbets, and secured at the top by a rod, b, in a well-known manner.
The front plate is cast with the curves, and the side plates tapering, as shown in figs. 1 and 2,
E represents an opening in the back' plate, with proper flanges for connecting the flue with the throat of the fire-place, as seen in fig. 2.
F F are inside end plates, with air-chambers c c, and resting on lugs d d, and
G is an inside back plate, with air-chamber H, as
seen in fig. 3.
At the top of plate G is an opening, e, for the passage of the air, from the air-chamber H, into the throat of the fire-place, (See fig. 1.)
Plate G rests upon lugs f f.
K is a mantel-piece, attached to the top of the back plate D by a flange, fitting in a rabbct, and secured by screws, or rivets, and supported by a bracket, or brace, L, resting against flanges on the plate and-mantel, as shown in fig. 2. 1
The air which passes fiom the ash=box through the air-chambers c c and H, and opening 0, into the fireplace above the fire, as indicated by the red lines, increases the draught of the chimney and aids combustion, and, also and especially, prevents the overheating of the plates F F and G, as well as the outside plates, thus rendering them less liable to spring, or warp, and increasing their durability.
v The throat of the fire-place connects with the flue, through opening E, as indicated by the blue arrows.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. The plates F F and G, constructed with air-chambers c c and H and'opening c, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The portable fire-place, constructed of plates B, O O, and D, with opening E, in combination with the mantel K, and with the plates F F and G, all arranged substantially as described.
As evidence thatI claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two witnesses.
'ALVAH J. SPRAGUE. Witnesses H. O. PARKER, 0. R; ALLEN.
