Letters Patent No. 95,529, dated October 5,1869.

TIRE-PLACE.

The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the 581116- To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ASA SNYDER, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico, and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire- Grates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and l v Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section.

This invention consists of a basket-grate and concave perforated radiator, placed in such relation to the chimney and jambs as to leave an air-space between the grate and the chimney and jambs, said air-space being in fact a continuation, "downward, of the. smoke-flue of the chimney, and being separated from such smokeflue by a damper placed between the radiator and the chimney for the purpose of creating a, rapid draught through the air-space, and carrying ofi the debris dislodged by rakingthefire. r

The radiator E is provided with a large number of perforations, 0, just above the grate, through which air enters from the space D, and, mingling with the products of combustion rising from the grate, tends'to their more perfect consumption.

A damper, F, is placed across, the space between the top of the reflector and the brick-work, and just at. the mouth of the flue F. L w

Bydra'wing the damper, a rapid ascending current of air is created in the space D, which current bears off, all ashes and cinders falling out of the grate during the rakingmrocess.
