No. 98,045. Patented Dec. 21, 1869.

GEORGE W. 'EVERHART, or LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
Letters Patent 'No. 98,045, dated December 21, 1869.
FIRE-PLACE G-iRA'I'B.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE WQEVERH RT, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson, and State of .Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Grates; and I do hereby declare that air more directly at these parts, for the better combnstion of the coal and the gases arising therefrom.
It also consists in providing a recess in the hearth or, bottom of the fire-piace, under. the grate, for the reception of ash-pans of greater capacity than can be contained on the top of the hearth, whereby a much larger quantity of cinder and ashes may be received and retained, so that less frequent removals of the same will be required.
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional elevation of my improved grate, and 1 Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A. represents the basket of ironrods or bars, which,
instead of being open at the ends and back, as in the usual way, and fitting snugly against the same, I make narrower and shorter than the space in the brick-work,
and with ends and back of similar or suitable construction of iron bars or rods, to confine the coal at the said ends and back, and provide the free space B thereat, whereby the air may have free access to the fire hehind, for the bettersupply of oxygen, and thereby to cause more perfect combustion.
'O is the recessiu the hearth or bed-plate under the grate, and
D, the large ash-pan.
By means of this recess themapacity of the pan may be largely increased, andtherehy require less frequent removal.
. Having thus described myinvention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure hy'lietters I Patent- 1. The arrangement of thegrate-basket A, withthe wall of the fire-place, to provide the air-space at the ends and the rear, substantially as specified.
2. The arrangement of the recess 0 and ash-pan, D in the hearth or bed, substantially as specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this day of 1869.
. GEO. W. EVERHA RT.
