clear, and exact description of the construction and cimiteri tatw THOMAS PHILLIPS,
Letters Patent No, 108,180
OF CADIZ, OHIO.
, dated October 11, 1870.
The Schedule referred bo in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all tch-omit l11u11/ concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS PHILLIPS, of Cadiz, in the county of Harrison and State o1" Ohio, have invented a new and valpable Improvement irrStoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull,
operation of the same, reference beingr had to the an-v nexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation ol` my stove in transverse vertical section, and
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same.
'The nature ofmy invention consists in certain improvements on what is known as the open stove, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In older to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents the body ot the stove, which is open at the i'ront, and at thc top provided with an opening, o, where the stove-pipe is attached.
Inside of the top ol the stove A is a plate or hood, connected with the arch in front, and extending back over the ire about six inches, and then inclining downward about the same distance.
rlhe air, in passing under the arch of the hood, comes in contact with thc tire, carrying with it the blaze and heat of the fire against and into the rear part ot' the stove, thereby causing it to heat, without the incumlnance of doors, and, furthermore, makes afull, open tire with increased draught.
At the top ot' the hood B is a hole, b, to carry oit` puffs of smoke that may fail to pass under the rear arch.
Small stoves will not need this hole b, but in larger ones it is preferable.
C C re )resent thc usual grate-bars, iu front of which, an meh (more or less) distant, are placed thin ornamental bars, D D, making a double grate and forming a. flue, through which the ashes fall, allowing the hearth and whole front to be kept clean and neat.
The fender d, forn'red on the top bar D, prevents all danger from fire falling out.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claiin as new, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is l l. 'In combination with the usual grate-bars O C, thc additional bars D D, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the stove A,'plate or hood B, grate-bars C (l, and additional bars D D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The upper grate-bar, provided lwith a concave fender, d, substantially as and for the purposes specificd.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name iu the presence of two witnesses.
THOS. PHILLIPS.
Witnesses:
