Description

M. 3. KING.
FIRE-PLACE.
Patented July 18. 1878.
ATTORNEYS.
N- PETERS, PHDTO-LIYHOGRAPHER. WASH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcEi.
MoLEswoRTH B. KING, or CHICAGO, ILLINoIs.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,924, dated July 18, 1876 application filed May 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: 7
'Be it known that I, MOLESWORTH B. KING, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Fire- Place Heater, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to an air-heating eontrivance with a fire-grate for heating upper rooms; and consists of the construction and arrangement of the same, as hereinafter de scribed.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved air-heating attachment to fire-grates, taken on the line a; a of Fig. 2.. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 1/ y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontalsection on line 2 2, Fig.2.
Similar, letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the fire-grate, below which I propose to arrange an ash-sitter over the ash-pit, for sitting the cinders from the ashes as they fall into the pit, and having a rod extending out at the front or side of one of the joints for working it. 0 is the blower, in which I propose to have a damper at A, to admit air to prevent the blaze from striking the enameled front of the fire-place, and for admitting a regulated supply of air over the fire-bed. D is. a pipe, admitting fresh air from outside to the space under the fire-grate, for supplying air for combustion. E is a double back plate to the fire-box, receiving air at F for heating it,- and for protecting the plate. G represents pipes connecting the space between the two parts of the back plate with the hot-air space H in the chimney above the inverted funneltop I of the fire-box, said pipes being (in practice) connected with the back plate by suitanel forms the partition between the fire-box and the hot-air space. J is the smoke-pipe, attached to the top of the funnel, and passing up through the partition. K, L, and M are registers for the escape of the hot airinto the rooms; N, dampers between the registers; O, pipe-connection for connecting stove-pipes and P represents aventilating-tube, with registers Q, and also with a damper, R, opening with the hot-air space to let 011 the hot air when required.
I also propose to make a hollow handle, S, to the blower, with perforations, to allow the air to circulate through it and keep it cool.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, in a fire-place heater, of the hollow back plate E, having air-inlet,
MOLESWORIH BURTON KING.
