Description

Dec.l 8, 1925- lW.'G. ARROWOOD INCINERATOR Filed Nov. 13, 1923 I dummy raantea nee. s, 19zs.
PATENT oFFalcE.
l WILLIAM G. ARROWOOD, HA'IIHORNE, CALIFORNIA.
INCINERATOR.
Applicati'en led November 13, 1923. Serial No. 674,535.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM G. ARRO- wooo, a citizen of the'United States, residin at Hawthorne, in the county of Los Ange es and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Incinerators, of which the following is a specilication.
The present invention relates to improvements 1n mclnerators,
and particularly to p apparatus of this character which is intended primarily for safely burning garden or lawn trash or rubbish or household waste materials. I
An object of the invention is to provide a durable device or apparatus for the purpose described, which s all be relatively inexpensive of manufacture whose parts may, if1 gesired, be readily separated or assemb e With this and other objects in view, the invention resides in the construction and ar rangement of parts that will be hereinafter more particularly described and pointed out in connection with the accompanying draw-I lIt will be understood that in the drawing some of the parts are shown more or less conventionally, and that unless s ecifically included in the ap ended claims, t e invention is not intended to be limited to the exact details illustrated, the drawino' being designed to be illustrative rather t an restrictive of the invention.
In the drawing i Figure 1 is an elevation of an incinerator constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section substantially dn the line2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section substantially on the line 3.-3 .of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of a portion of one of the corner pieces 'or up rights and of two of the metal elements of the incinerator walls. y
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that the embodiment'of the invention illustrated is composedfof four uprights or corner pieces 1, walls connecting said corner pieces and formed of a plurahty of courses of brick or tile' 2 separated by metal'bars', and a top 4, which embraces the upper ends of the walls and corner pieces or posts.
of the side walls,
The metal corner Ipieces or uprights 1 are of such form in them will embrace the adjacent ends of two and, as above stated, all of said corner pieces and the walls are held together by the top or cap piece 4.
To insure stability of the apparatus, spur pieces or anchors 5 may be provided, which will be embedded in the ground with their upper ends extending into the lower ends of the uprights or posts 1.
AS. shown, each corner piece or. upright is formed from a sheet metal blank, which is folded uponl itself to provide two longitudinal channels 6, 7, arranged at right angles to each other and the ends of the side walls extend into these channels.
Each side wall is preferably composed of a plurality of courses of brick or tile, the term brick being hereinafter employed as descri tive of blocks, slabs or lates of any suita le ireproof material. T e bricks cross section that each of site faces of one of the courses separated by the bars.
In the particular embodiment illustrated,
the separating bars 3 are arranged with their channel faces upward, so that the lowerf edges of the bricks 2 are fitted snugly therein.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the lower tier of brick include members 11 extending parallel to opposite sides of the incinerator body and forming passages 10, which extend throughout the width of the apparatus and are open at both ends. The passages 10 thus formed provide a ready means for removal of ashes and the upper edges of the walls 11 of such passages serve as supports for the material beingburned.
The outer side walls of the supported:y as shown, rating bars 3.
In one of the side walls, the bricks are so arranged as to leave an o ening 12, through which the contents of tlie apparatus may be ignited.
The top 4 is preferably made of metal, and has a marginal Hat base section resting on the top of the side walls and having depending marginal flanges 13, which closely embrace the sides of the walls and the uprights 1. Said top is provided with a smoke outlet 14, about which may be fitted a suitable stack 15, and one wall of the top is inclined from the outlet 14 forward to the portion 16 which rests upon the upper ends of the walls. In this inclined section of the top is formed an v,opening which is closed by a door or cover 17 pivotally mounted or hinged to a suitable frame as at 18. As
shown the opening in the top is provided at opposite sides with outwardly projecting members 2O and the cover 17 has an outwardly projecting marginal flange 21. The pivot rod 18 extends lthrough the frame members 20 and adjacent sections of the marginal door flange 21. The lower, transversely extendingbs'ection of the door flange is adapted to extend parallel to the section 16 of the top 4 when the door is in open v A screen 19 is preferably placed across the smoke outlet 14 to prevent flaming particles from being carried out of the apparatus when in use.
It is believed that the operation and adf vantages of the apparatus will be evident from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing. The apparatus may, of course, be made in various sizes and of diiferent forms. YThe parte thereof can be readily assembled in position for use, or, if desired, can be disconnected and stored ina minimum amount of space. The corner pieces and bars/separating the brick of the side walls may be of relat1vel'yl lightV metal and when `the parts are assembled, a strong and durable apparatus is' provided.
' The side walls and corner pieces4 are lsecurely interlocked when assembled,` and there is no danger of fire escaping to'dal'nage articles outside of the it is .in use. y f
Having thus described the invention, what -is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is :-v v
