Description
W. D. RANNEY.
FURNACEARCH.
APPLICATION FILED JAN-29, 1918.

WILLIAM D. RANNEY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
FURNACE-ARCH.
Application filed January 29, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. RANNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county f Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Furnace-Arches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relating to furnaces has for its object to provide an improved construction of fire box arch of simple and economical construction that can be erected without the aid of expert workmen. As now generally used such arches are hand sprung, that is they are built of fire brick over a specially erected form.
The expansion and contraction of a hand sprung arch over a furnace fire and the end thrust due to the weight of the arch on the side Walls has a tendency to cause it to fall and shortens the life of the arch, thereby necessitating a rebuilding or removal of the entire arch and side walls. The present invention obviates these troubles and provides an arch which can be economically and easily repaired by replacing any of its parts.
The invention is embodied in the construction shown in the accompanying drawing and set forth in the following description, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is mainly a vertical longitudinal section of a boiler furnace equipped with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a structure.
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of one of the blocks used in the arch structure.
In the views 5 designates the side walls of the furnace between which is supported an ordinary boiler 6.
The character 7 designates the opening through which fuel is supplied to the fire box, said opening being provided with the usual door 8. Supported between the door arch and the ordinary bridge wall 9 is a top plan view of the arch Copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.

grate of any suitable construction but preferably of the shaking variety inclined to about fifteen degrees rearward. Below the grate is the ash pit 10 to which access is had through an opening in the door arch provided with a door 10 In the fire box above the grate I provide an arch including a frame consisting of a series of bars 11 resting as shown, removably at their upper ends upon a plate 12 inserted in the crown of the door arch and at their lower ends removably as shown upon a cross bar 13, supported at its opposite ends in the side walls of the furnace. The
Changes can be made in the forms and sizes of the parts ithout departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
In combination with the fire box and door arch of a boiler furnace, a plurality of parallel bars extending rearwardly in the fire box, each of said bars resting removably at its forward end upon the crown of the door arch and having its rear end bifurcate, a bar supported between the side walls of the fire box and receiving and supporting the bifurcate ends of said parallel bars, and blocks of refractory material having lips resting removably upon said parallel bars to support the blocks between them.
WILLIAM D. RANNEY.
