Patented Aug. 10, 1948 UNITARY ANDIRON LOCKING FUEL HOLDER Frank H. Waggoner, Ramsey, N. J.
Application December 29, 1944, Serial No. 570,327
1 claim. 1
My invention relates to a unitary andiron locking fuel holder and its novelty consists in the adaptation and arrangement of parts as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
Most andirons are made in a separate pair and when logs are placed on them or When it is attempted to adjust logs thereon it is practically impossible to do so without knccking them over or disarranging them and the legs thereon.
My device eliminates these troubles completely by locking the pair of andirons together without the use of fastening means that require adjustment so that they neither roll nor change their position relative to each other when placing or adjusting logs thereon and also furnishes a fuel supporting means not only between said andirons but also beyond the span of said andirons.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective of my complete device in the long form for large fireplaces;
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1:
Fig. 3 is a perspective of a short form of my device in use on a pair of andirons;
Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, 5 is the large form of my unitary andiron looking fuel holder which is preferably a unitary casting which has the outer frame and middle cross bar i l all of a V-shape coming down to a rounded point Hi as shown in Fig. 2, so that said edge Hl allows the flame of the fire to lap up and draw up around the same so that the fire will draw up around all sides of the logs which lie thereon.
This holder 5 also has four cut-outs 6 which are adapted to fit over irons 3 of a pair of andirons 9 so as to securely lock them together against displacement or upsetting without any separate fastening means or tools and insuring perfect spacing. Cross bars I 2 are made thinner in depth so as to lie over the irons 8 and maintain thereby a uniform strength of metal parts in the combined holder 5 and irons 8.
A shorter form of my holder is shown in Fig. 3 which is adapted to be used with andirons in the smaller type of fireplaces and is designated holder 7. This has the V-shaped or tapered cross section of Fig. 2 in the longitudinal sides 2 and cross bars '3 and end bars '4 are formed thinner and square to rest on the irons 8 and form a combined structure of uniform metallic strength.
This holder 'l also has cut-outs 6 at each of the four ends which are adapted to fit onto irons 8 and lock securely in position thereover without the use of any fastener or tools and thereby hold the andirons 9 securely locked in position so that logs can be placed on holder 1 or adjusted thereon without either rolling over said andirons 9 or disturbing their relative positions to each other. This looking of 'l at 6 over 8 is clearly shown in Fig'. 4.
In using my holder 5 the andirons 9 will be placed in the fireplaces so that the cut-outs 6 will register over the irons 8 and lock them together so that they cannot roll over or be disturbed from their relative fixed locked positions even when heavy logs are placed or adjusted on holder 5. It will be apparent that the ends of holder 5 will extend a substantial distance beyond the irons 3 over which 5 is locked and that logs and fuel substantially longer than the distance between irons 8 will thereby be properly supported at their ends by said extending ends of 5.
The rounded V-shaped lower edges of the end and middle bars I l of 5 also permit the draft and flames to lap up around them so as to insure the logs burning on both sides of said bars.
One of the great advantages of my invention over the prior art, lies in the strong unitary structure of my holders 5 and 'I and their adaptability to engaging a pair of irons 8 on a pair of andirons such as 9 and looking them together without the use of any separate fastening means and without the use of any tools for operating such separate fastening means.
Many variations may be made in my device without departing from the intent and spirit of the same and my disclosure and claim comprehend the same.
What I claim is:
The combination of a pair of andirons of usual construction having irons of right angular cross section, a unitary grate having a rectangular frame and integral cross bars with right angular cut outs in the sides of said frame adapted to fit over said irons and lock said andirons and 3 unitary grate in a fixed relation to each other.
