Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the illustrated device comprises a stand or support 10, upon which a can 12 is tiltably mounted, with respect to a supporting surface, such as the ground G.
The support 10 comprises a pair of longitudinally elongated, horizontal side bars 14, preferably of laterally outwardly facing angle iron m nnin verticalflan ges 16 and horizontal flanges18, Fixed to, the flanges, 16 and 18, at the outward sides of the flanges 16,, at the midle'ng'th points of the bars 14 "as by welds 19 are single perpendicular uprights or standards 20, preferably of angle ironform, and having longitudinal flanges 22 and 1ate'ralflanges'24. The open upper end 47 of the can 12 is closable by a cover 60 which is composed of a rear or inner sectorshaped section 62 which is substantially permanently fixed around the rear of the upper end 47, and a major front section 64. The sections 62 and 64 have in common flat top walls 66 and 68 and depending arcuate flanges or side walls 70 and 72, respectively, to bear against the outer side of the can side wall 46.
The sections are assembled by a pair of laterally spaced hinges 74, which have rear leaves 76 secured, as indicated at 78, upon the rear section top wall 66 and front leaves 3 1 80, similarly secured upon the top wall of the front section 64, and bridging the facing and unflanged edges 82 and 84, respectively of the sections. Fixed on and reaching upwardly and forwardly from the rear hinge leaf 76 of each hinge 74 and over the front hinge leaves 80, are forwardly extending stop arms 86, which are positioned to 'be engaged by the front cover section 64, as by the front hinge leaves .80, when the front cover section 64 is swung upwardly and rearwardly from closed telescoped engagement in the upper end of the can 12, to a right-angular open position, as shown in full lines in Figure 3 and in phantom lines in Figure 1, to enable garbage to be placed in the can and to be dumped from the can, and for washing the can. 1 The front cover section 64 is held in positively closed position by releasable latch means which preferably is in the form of a heavy gauge, upstanding spring latch bar 88, which has a lower end portion fixed to the outer side of the front of the can side wall 46, at a level spaced below the upper end 47 of the can 12, as by means of rivets 90. The latch bar 88 has a free upper end portion which terminates at its upper end in a forwardly directed hook 92, which is formed and arranged to engage over a hook flange 94 on an L-shaped detent 96 which is fixed on the outer side of the side wall 72 of the front cover section 64, as seen in Figures 1, 2 and 3. Relatively heavy inward pressure on the upper part of the latch bar 88, such as could not be expected to be exerted by an animal, is required to release the latch hook 92 from the hook flange 94 of the detent 96, so as to free the cover section 64 to be opened.
For automatically swinging the front cover section 64 upwardly to its stopped, open position, spring means is provided, which preferably takes the form of an upstanding u'earwardly inclined anchor arm 98- which is fixed at its lower end, as indicated at 100, to a central part of the'top wall 66 of the fixed rear cover section 62, and has vertically spaced adjustment holes 102 in its upper end, in which is selectively engaged a hook 104 on the rear and elevated end of a contractile helical spring 106, which has on its forward end a hook 108 engaged through an eye 110 fixed centrally in the top wall 68 of the front cover section 64 at a forward location thereon. The spring 106 is stretched and under tension between the anchor arm 98 and the front cover section, so that when the latch bar 88 is released from the hook flange 94, the front cover section 64 is pulled open by the spring 106, into stop engagement with the stop arms 86, and is held open thereagainst, until forcibly returned to closed position against the resistance of the sp i a The construction of the above described can makes the same rat, dog and fly-proof; and enables the can to be made in different sizes appropriate for use in homes, apartments, institutions, industrial and commercial establishments, and in public areas such as public parks.
Although there has been shown and described herein a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily confined thereto, and that any change or changes in the structure of and in the relative arrangements of components thereof are contemplated as being within the scope of the invention as defined by the claims appended hereto.
