REFUSE-RECEPTACLE HOLDER.
Application filed .Tuly 24, 1922. Serial No. 577,030. 7
Be it known that I, ANDREW ,T. WAN- NENWETSGH, a citizen of the United States,
residing at Hamburg, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Refuse-Receptacle Holders, ofiwhich the following is a specification.. j
j This invention relates to means for supporting a refuse receptacle so that the same when not in use may be stowed away un-J derneath the drain board of'a kitchen sink or withdrawn from underneath the same when refuse is to be placed therein.
It. is the purpose of this invention to provide simple, convenient and inexpensive means whereby arefuse receptacle may be Vthus mounted on the underside of a drain board or elsewhere.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a drain board and sink equipped with my improved receptaclev holder and showing the refuse receptacle swung out into its receiving position. F gure2 is a front elevation of the same, partly'in section, and showing the refuse receptacle swung underneath the drain board. Figure 3 is a horizontal section takenon line 4 3, Fig. 2, looking downwardly. Flgure t Vis a similar view taken on the same line,
looking upwardly. Figures yf5 and- 6 are fragmentarylvertical sections vtaken on lines 5 5 and 6-6, Fig. 3.. Figure7 is a fragmentary vertical transverse section showing suitable means for attaching the refuse receptacle holder to a drainboard made .of
cast metal. Figure 8 is a similar view showing a modified. construction' of the refusey on the sink and drain board, a horizontally swinging carrier mounted on the bracket and adapted to support the refuse recep-` tacle 13 which latter preferably consists f a metal pail, and Aa lid pivotally 'mounted onthe carrier and adapted to cover and uncover the' top of the pail.
construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 is secured to the underside of the wooden drain board adjacent to the ,front edge thereof by means of screws 15,'and a retaining arm 16 extending transversely inward and lengthwise toward the sink'and having its *innen end arranged between the transverse v end wall 11 of the `sink and the underside of the tail end ofthe drain board, thereby-preventing the bracket from sagging or getting out of place and insuring main- The bracket preferably comprises a horiz-j Zontal longitudinal bar 14 which, in .the
tenance of the refuse receptacle in its prop-A er position regardless ofthe weight of its contents.
The carrier comprises an annular band or ring 17 of metal which is provided on one side with a laterally projecting arm `18 which is pivoted to the underside of the bracket by an eye 19 -arranged on thel outer end of the arm and turning on a pin 2() depending from the supporting bar 14 adjacent to one end thereof which pin has a head 21 at its lower end for confining the eye thereon. In the preferred formof.
the ring 17, the same is split and its ends .are spaced apart to form a locking notch or recess 22 therebetween, as sho-wn inF-ig.
3. The arm 18andeyeg19 4are preferably.f2-ff;
constructed of a piece of band iron which, is doubled upon itself and has opposite ends constructed to form laterally projecting lugs 31 on this arm which are secured to the ends of the ring 17 by rivets-24, as shown or by other suitable means.' V
ai On this ring is detachably mounted al.y
housing or casing which receives and encloses the refuse receptacle.l -This ca'sing comprises a circular wall or body 25 ladapt-4 ed to pass down through the ring and having an external bead 26 at its upper edge which rests on s,aidring and a bottom 27 Y at its lower;` edge,v and a lid 28"piv'otally lconnected on one' part of its rim by a hinge 29 with .the upper edge ofthe wall 25, so
the body of the casing. Y l j The refuse receptacle 13. 1sy ada tedto be arranged within, this casing an may be paratory to emptying the receptacle upon as to be capable ofswinging into an open... and closed position relative to the topyot',
placed therein or removedtherefrom preboard, vas shown in Fig. 2.
raising the lid of the casing. The casing may be removed from the carrier, and the receptacle removed from the casing to permit of thoroughly cleansing the same.
n Upon swinging the carrier together with the casing and receptacle from underneath the drain board, the receptacle is accessible for depositing refuse in the same and upon swinging these parts underneath the drain board, they are out of the tvay.
The carrier Ais preferably 4pivoted so close to the underside of the drain board that the lid of the casing must be closed in order to permit the casing to pass underneath the drain board and thesame must be moved fully from underneath the drain board before the lid can be opened. The carrier for this purpose is preferably provided on its ring with a handle 3() whereby the same may be manipulated.
The hinge connecting the body and lid of the casing should preferably be arranged on the rear side of these parts so as to render the interior of the same `conveniently accessible from the front side. In order to insure retaining the casing always in this position, the upper part of the body of the casing is provided with a laterally project-l ing locking pin 23 which engages removably with the locking notch 22 in the carrier ring, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6.
In order to assist in supporting the car-r rier and hold the casingclose to the underside of the drain board when the casing, re-
ceptacle and carrier are swung underneath the drain board, a lifting device is provided consisting preferably of a hook arrangedon the supporting bar and having an upright back 32 forming a stop which is engaged by the arm of the carrier and limits the backwardfmovement of the carrier underneath the drain board, and a lower inclinedl lug 33 which engages with the underside of this arm and serves to support the samev when the carrier is underneath the` drain Means are 'provided for automatically opening the lid of the casing when swinging the latter forwardly from'underneath the drain board and closing the same upon swingingl the same backwardly underneath the drain board. The preferred means for` openin the lid shown in the drawings consists o a spring 34 surrounding the pintle of the hinge 29 and having its opposite ends connected with the body and lid of the receptacle, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5,; this .spring operating to raise said lid into an open position when the same swings forwardly clear of the drain board. The auto;-
erably consisting of a closing leaf spring i 35 bowed upwardly and arranged across the top of the lid and secured at one end thereto in such a position that upon moving the lid rearwardly, the upwardly bowed part of the closing spring engages the supporting bar and gradually shuts the lid over the body of the casing.
The several parts of this holder are so constructed that the same may be reversed in order to permit of using the same in connection with drain boards arranged either on the left or the right hand side of the sink.
In ,the case of a metal drainboard 36 having a depending mar inal flange 37, the supporting bar 14 of the racket is provided with one or more clam s 38 for securing this bar to said flange, eac of said clamps ha"- ing an outer jaw 39 lined with felt and engaging the outer side of the drain board ang'e and an inner screw 40 engaging the inner side of this flange, as `shown in Fig. 7.
If desired, the body and bottom of the casing may be omitted in which instance the bead of they refuse receptacle rests directly on the ring of the carrier and the lid 42 is connected with one leaf 41 of a hinge while the other leaf 43 of the latter is detachably seated in a vertical socket 44 on the supporting ring, as shown in Fi 8. i
This holder permits o? readily disposing of kitchen refuse whileDengaged in cooking and storing the same in a space which 0rdinarily is not used for any other purpose. Furthermore, the same i's so constructed that the refuse when stored is under oover so as saidreceptacle, andastop on said bracketV adapted to be engaged by said arm for lim-V iting the rearward movement of said carrier and provided at its lower end with an inclined llug which is adapted to engage the underside of said arm and lift'the carrier.
