This invention relates to a lunch box or similar receptacle.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a simple and attractive 5 receptacle of this character embodying a novel cover and handle arrangement whereby the handles, when gripped, enable the box to be conveniently carried and also act to secure the cover against accidental opening 10 movement or displacement although facilitating the opening of the cover when access to the interior of the box is desired.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, ar- 15 rangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which: I
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a lunch box embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view thereof in transverse section taken on line 22 of Figure l; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in section taken on line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the lunch box comprises a main receptacle designated generally at 1 and made up 30 of a body portion 2 having a bottom 3 closing its lower end and having its upper end open. The shape of the box may be varled but the drawings illustrate an attractive elliptical or oval shape. Around the upper marginal edge of the body portion 2 of the main receptacle an inwardly rolled rim 4 is provided and below the rolled rim 4 and in spaced relation thereto an outwardly directed rib 5 is formed in the body portion 2, the rib 5 extending around the entire periphery of the body portion 2.
A cover, designated generally at 6, is provided and is made up of a top plate 8 and a downwardly extending marginal flange 9, the lower edge of which is formed with a rolled rim 10. The cover 6 is of such size that its flange 9 snugly fits on the upper end of the body portion 2, the rolled rim 10 of the flange is made up of a single piece of wire stock bent to provide a gripping portion 14 which extends vertically up from the cover in the closed position of the cover and handles. Be yond the gripping portion the wire stock making up each handle is formed with a pair of angular arms designated generally at 15, each angular arm 15 having a portion 16 extending along the top plate of the cover and a portion 17 extending down along the flange 9 of the cover. portions 17 are curved outwardly as at 18 to extend around the rim l0 and rib 5 and just beyond the curved sections 18 the portions 17 terminate in laterally extending trunnions 19 which fit in hinge bearings 20 fixed to the body portion 2 of; the box. It will thus be seen that the handles 12 and 13 are of identical construction and that both are hinged to the body portion 2 of the recep-- tacle. Moreover, in the closed position of the cover both of the handles 12 and 13 0ccupy the same relation to the cover,,that is, both handles have the portions 17 of their arms substantially paralleling the flange 9 of the cover and the portion 16 of their arms lying flush against the top plate of the cover, the gripping portions 14 lying close together and in substantial alinement and projecting vertically from the top plate of the cover,
One of the handles, preferably the handle 12, may be fastened to the cover, and this may be accomplished inany suitable nanner as by soldering the portions 16 of the arms 15 to the top plate of the cover as indicated With this. construction, the box, when closed, has its parts positioned as shown in- Figure 1, and when the user grips the portions 14 ofv the handles to carry the box then Adjacent their lower ends the the cover is automatically held on the main to the cover to facilitate removal of the cover receptacle and cannot accidentally open. To from the receptacle. open the box it is merely necessary to swing In Witness whereof, I hereto affix my sigthe handle 13 about its hinge constituted by nature.
the trunnions 19 and hinge bearing 20 until PHILIP KEMPTER.
it lies over against one side of the box and out of the way of the cover. In such'position the handle 13 may be used to steady the box while the other handle 12 is gripped and pulled to 10 swingthe handle and the cover over to one I side of the main receptacle 1, the handle 12 carrying the cover with it and supporting the cover in open position.
In conjunction with the main receptacle,
5 a tray or auxiliary receptacle designated generally at 25 may be provided. This tray 25 I is of the same shape in horizontal cross section as the body portion 2 of the box 1 and it has a bottom plate 26 and an upwardly ex- 20 tending marginal flange 27 terminating in I I an outwardly rolled edge or rim 28 which I rests on the inwardly rolled rim 4 when the tray is placed in position in the box. The tray is retained against excessive or undesir- 25 able displacement by the cover which, in its I closed position, limits upward movement of the tray, but the tray does not interfere with the opening and closing of the cover and it may be readily taken out when the cover is 30 removed. As the movement of the cover down onto the receptacle is limited by the rim 10 and rib 5, ample tray space is provided and articles in the tray will not be I crushed by the cover. 5 The invention claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a receptacle, a cover therefor and handles hinged to the receptacle and holding the cover against displacement when the 40 cover is closed'and the'handles are in position I for carrying the receptacle, one ofthe handles being secured to the cover. I "2. A device of the character described coinprising a receptacle, a cover having a flange 45 withwhichthe upper end of the receptacle I v i-nterfits, a pair'of handles including angular arms hingedly connected to the'receptacle and overlying the flange and body of the cover, said handles having gripping portions 50 connected to the arms and adapted to be dis- I I I v posed in close proximity to each other to be gripped simultaneously when the handles are positioned for carrying the receptacle, one I of" the handles being rigidly secured to the I 55 Coven I p I I 3. A device of the character described com prising a receptacle, a cover therefor, and handles having arms hinged to the receptacle and overlying the cover in the closed posi- 60 tion of the latter, said handles having gripping portions disposed in proximity to each other, so that the handles may be simultaneously gripped to facilitate the carrying 65 of the receptacle and to hold the cover on the receptacle, one of the handles being secured
