GARBAGE-RECEIVER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. IVA'rsoN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage- Receivers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a garbage receiver.

An object of the invention resides in the provision of a receiver which may be placed upon the top of the ordinary garbage can and which will prevent the escape of odors from the can.

A further object of the invention resides in so constructing the device that it will be cheap to manufacture and easily operated.

A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a pair of slides for receiving the garbage which slides are operable to allow the garbage to drop into the can and are so arranged that all of the garbage will be pushed therefrom.

With these and other objects in view such as will appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevational view showing my device in place upon a garbage can. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view showing the receiving slides in the positions they will occupy when the garbage is being placed in the receiver. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the slides in the positions they will occupy when the garbage has been dropped into the can. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view showing the manner in which the operating rods are mounted. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view taken in a plane at right angles to the plane of Fig. 5.

Referring to the drawings wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views :In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings I have illustrated an annular body portion 1 which has a strip 2 extending across the upper end thereof. Hinged to this strip are a pair of covers 3 and 4, the former being provided with a handle 5 and Specification of Letters Patent.

the latter being maintained in its closed position by a resilient clip 6 which is secured to the body portion 1 and engages over the edge of the said cover a. Extending down wardly from the strip 2 is a wall 7 which is secured at its lower end to a strip 8 which extends across the lower end of the body portion 1 parallel to the strip 2. The strip 2 projects from both sides of the wall 7 while the strip 8 projects from but one side. The lower end of the body portion 1 is provided with a bottom 9 which is, in turn, provided with a flange 10. This bottom 9 has a cutout portion 11 which is so located that a flange 12 is left between it and the flange 10. \Vhen the receiver is placed upon a garbage can the flange 10 will embrace the outer face and the bottom 9 which includes the flange 12 will rest upon the upper edge of the can.

Extending inwardly from the inner face of the body portion 1 is an annular flange 13 which is in slight spaced relation to the bottom 9.

In order that the cut-out portion 11 may be opened and closed at the will of the operator I have provided a pair of slides 14 which are mounted on the lower ends of a pair of rods 15 and are operable between the bottom '9 and the annular flange 13. These rods 15 extend upwardly and are mounted in I the strips 2 and 8. The upper ends of the rods extend above the strip 2 and are provided with handles 16 which, when the slides are in position to close the cut-out portion 11, lie parallel to the strip 2 and which, when the slides are in position so that the cut-out portion will be open, will extend out wardly from the strip.

In order that the movement ofthe slides 14 may be limited I have provided a pair of stops 17 and 18 the latter being for limiting the movement away from the cut-out portion 11 and the former for limiting the movement over the cut-out portion.

The body portion 1 is provided with a pair of handles 19 to facilitate the removal from and the placing of it on the can.

In using the device it is placed upon a garbage can in the manner illustrated in the drawings. 'When it is desired to place garbage in the can the cover 3 may be raised and the garbage dumped upon the slides 14: these slides being in positions to close the cut-out portion 11. The cover is then lowered and the slides operated by means of the handles 16, during which movement the wall Lil 7 will push the garbage from the slides into the can. The slides may then be moved by means of the handles 16 to again close the cut-out portion 11 at which time the odor will be prevented from escaping from the can and the receiver will be in condition to again be operated.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a garbage receiver which is so constructed that the odor from the can will be prevented from escaping.

I have constructed the device so that it may be easily placed upon and removed from the garbage can. Furthermore I have constructed the device so that the covers may be swung upwardly and the device readily cleaned.

IVhat I claim is 1. In a garbage receiver the combination with a cylindrical 'body portion having a bottom with a cut-out portion therein, of a pair of revoluble slides for closing said cutout portion, a Wall dividing the body portion into two compartments, at the lower end of one of which the cut-out portion is located and a pair of covers hinged to the body portion and adapted to independently cover the said compartments.

2. In a garbage receiver the combination with a cylindrical body portion having strips extending across the top and bottom thereof, of a bottom secured to said body portion, the said bottom having a cut-out portion therein located to one side of the said strip, a wall extending between the strips, rods extending through and rotatably mounted in the said strips, the said rods having handles on their upper ends, slides on the lower ends of the rods adapted to close said cut-out portions, and covers for said body portion.

3. In a garbage receiver the combination with a cylindrical body portion having a bottom with a cut-out portion therein, of a wall dividing the body portion into two compartments, and revoluble slides for closing the cut-out portion movable beneath the said wall whereby the garbage will be pushed from the slides.
