Description

(No Model.)
M. W. SGHUMAGHER.
DUST BOX 0R PAN.
Patented Aug. 26, 1890.
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARIE W. SCHUMAOHER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DUST BOX OR PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,251, dated August 26, 1890.
Application filed March 21, 1890. Serial No. 344,713. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ll/IARIE W. SOI-IUMACHER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dust Boxes or Pans, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification *and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a dust-box provided with a tray which may be drawn outso that dirt or dust may be swept thereon into the box.
It also consists of a deflector for preventing the escape of the dust which has been swept into the box.
It also consists of the combination of parts herein set' forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a dust-box embodying my invention, the parts being in position for use. Fig. 2 represents a view of a vertical section of the box shown in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a box having on its bottom a tray B, which is fitted therein, so as to be adapted to be drawn out, as shown in Fig. 1.
Secured to the sides 0 of the box are cleats- D, between which and the bottom E of the box the tray B is guided. The outer edge of the tray B is beveled, so that the dirt or dust can be readily brushed or swept thereon. On the open side of the box at the upper part thereof is a depending deflector F, formed of doors hinged to the sides 0 of the box and secured in closed position by any suitable means, such as the latch G. Below the deflector F are doors H, for closing the remainder of the box when the latter is not in use. A handle J, secured to the box, serves for conveniently carrying the same.
In using the device the box is placed on the floor, the doors H are opened, and the tray B is drawn out, the doors forming the deflector being closed, as shown in Fig. 1. The dust is then readily brushed or swept upon the tray B and into the box through the open side, the deflector serving to prevent the light dirt or dust which arises in the box, owing to the current of air created while sweeping the dirt into the box, from escaping therefrom, as shown by the arrows, Fig. 1. When the dirt has been gathered, the tray is pushed into the box, and the doors H are closed and secured in place by a latch or other means, the boxthen being in condition for carriage to any place Where its contents may be deposited. As the deflector is constructed of hinged doors, it may be opened so that the interior of the upper portion of the box may be conveniently reached for cleaning purposes whenever desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A dust box or pan having a sliding tray on the bottom thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A dust box or pan having a sliding tray .and doors inclosing the same within the box,
said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. A dust box or pan having an open side, a sliding tray at its bottom, a deflector at top, which may be opened and closed, and a door or doors below said deflector, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4. A dust-box having a sliding tray, one of the ends of which is adapted to be projected from said box, a deflector at the upper portion of the side from which said slide is projected, and a door or doors secured to the sides of the box, and when opened providing admission into the box between the deflector and the tray, said parts being combined substantially as described.
5. A dust box or pan having a sliding tray adapted to be projected from an open side thereof when in use and to be inclosed in the box when not in use, said tray having its projecting edge beveled, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
