'To all whom t may concern v Be it known that I, LAwRmvo Paconnir,

a Subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Milwaukee, inthe county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful improvements in ReceptacleCovers, of which the following is a specification.

wThis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in receptacle covers.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide a cover for receptacles or wells that are particularly adapted to contain refuse, such as garbage, and in which the cover is constructed to Vprovide a receiving compartment that may be completely closed to prevent objectionable odors from escaping from the container when the refuse is emptied from the cover into the container.

A further object of the invention is to provide a cover for a garbage receptacle or container in which there is provided a receiving compartment for the garbage that is adapted to be closed, at its upper end and subsequently opened at its lower end to cause the contents thereof to be emptied into the container while the lower sliding trap door is provided with a self-cleaning device to render the device sanitary.

lVith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle cover built in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same showing the sliding doors in closed position, the upper sliding door being shown in dotted line position and further illustrating the self-cleaning attachment for the lower' sliding door, and Fig. 3 is a crosssectional view taken on line III-III of F ig. 2.

Referringl more in detail to the accompanying drawing, there is shown a box-like structure 5 that is of rectangular shape and including side walls, end walls 6 and 7, and

a cover wall 8. The receptacle cover 5 is pair completely open at `'its bottom to facilitate 'the positioning of the same upon a suitable receptacle or container, while the cover wall 8 extends substantially half-way of the upper en d thereof and is provided with a centralopening affording side extensionV legs `9 that are receivedy on theYV upper edges of fthe side walls of the cover.

As shown in Fig. 3, there is provided a'l supporting of oppositelyarranged ledges 12 upon which is slidably mounted a trap door 13, the side edges of which are received in longitudinal grooves 14- provided in the inner faces of the side walls of the cover 5. The inner face of the end wall 6 is grooved as at 15 for the reception of the projected end of the trap door 13 to constitute a receiving stop therefor. An eye-bolt 16 is carried by the opposite end of the trap door 13 and to which one end of an operating link 17 is connected, the said link being provided with a handle 18 on the opposite end thereof that projects through an opening 19 provided in the end wall of the cover. provided a receiving compartment 20 for the cover, selectively closed atits lower end by the trap door 13.while the upper end thereof is provided with a sliding closure door 21 that is slidably mounted in the opposite channel guides 22 and is limited in its closing movement by being passed under the end member' 23 of the channel guides and engaging the upper end of the end wall 6. An operating knob 24 is carried by the sliding door 21 and the door is limited in its opening sliding movement by engaging a stop lug 25 fastened to the outer end of the upper wall 8.

By this construction there isv In operation, the device may be suitably 13 and permit the contents thereof to be emptied into the container positioned beneath the cover. In this movement a flexible scraper 26 secured as at 27 to the outer 5 face of the vertical partition Wall 11 engages the upper face of the trap door 13 and effectively removes all refuse therefrom so as to render the device Wholly sanitary and desirable for the purposes intended. It will be noted that all disagreeable odors from the main container are prevented from escaping in view of the` fact that the cover Wall 21 is closed `before the trap door 13 is opened.

While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the ,preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
