ALFRED GRAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TRAVE LING-CASE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18 1908.
Application filed February 28, 1907. Serial No. 359,776.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED GRAY, a subj ect of the King of Great Britain, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Traveling-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates totraveling cases, generally, such as dress suit cases, bags,
satchels and the like; and it has for its object to provide a traveling case with a separate receptacle in the nature of a drawer which is accessible without first opening the lid of the case proper.
My invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein- .after fully described, claimed and illustrated and 3 by means of a vertically and transversely disposed partition 4. The compartment 2 is larger than the compartment 3 and opens out through one side of the case. This compartment is adapted to be closed by a lid 5, which is of the ordinary construction, and which is adapted to be secured in closed position by means of a lock 6. A handle 7 is secured to the top of the case. The com.
partment 3 is arranged at one end of the case and opens out through the top thereof. This compartment is adapted to slidably receive a drawer or receptacle 8. The drawer or receptacle 8 has one side fully opened, and its top wall extends beyond the plane thereof to provide a flange 9. The drawer or receptacle 8 is adapted to be closed by means of hinged lids 10, which are secured in closed position by means of a suitable fastening device such as a hook and staple 11 and 12. The flange 9 of the drawer or receptacle is adapted to rest upon the. upper end of the case and is provided with hingedly supported fastening members 13, which are provided with apertures 14 adapted to engage springstuds 15 secured to and projecting laterally from the sides of the case. These fastening members are adapted to secure the drawer or receptacle against accidental displacement.
When it is desired to secure the drawer against unauthorized withdrawal, a lock 16 is used, said lock being adapted to cooperate with a hasp 17 which extends transversely across the upper end of the drawer, as fully disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
As the drawer or receptacle 8 is withdrawable through the top of the case, access thereto can be readily and quickly had. The provision of the fastening members 13 obviates the necessity for the use of a look, only when it is desired to secure the drawer or receptacle against unauthorized withdrawal.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereunto anneXed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be understood and appreciated.
The traveling case of the improved construction herein described may be manufactured at a moderate expense and. it is in every respect useful and serviceable.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is The herein described traveling case having a transverse vertical partition near one end dividing said case into a larger compartment and a smaller compartment, said larger compartment being open on one side of the case and having a hinged cover forming a major portion of such side of the case, said smaller compartment being open at the top and a drawer of the size and shape to adapt it to enter and fill said smaller compartment, said drawer being removable from said case through the upper open end of said smaller compartment, having hinged covers forming one of the side walls and having a top, the edges of which project beyond the side walls thereof and form flanges to bear on the upper side of the case and the upper edges of the Walls of said smaller compartment, the said ease having studs projecting from the outer sldes of opposite walls of such smaller compartment and said drawer having hinged catches on its upper side to coact with such studs and fasten such drawer in such smaller compartment. In testimony whereof, I affix my signature III presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED GRAY. Witnesses:
LESTER H. TI-IoMsoN, MAX ABRAHAM.
