IMPROVEMENT IN HAT-BOXES AND VALISES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,? I 4, dated April 25, 1876; application filed February 28, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES M. VAN HORN, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Hat-Box and Valise; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and

exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same,

reference being had to the accompanying a representation of my improved hat-box and valise closed for transportation. Fig. 2 is a representation of the same opened.

A and B are the two sides, which open in the middle and turn out-ward upon their lower outer edges, which are attached to the bottom 0.

In the middle of the bottom C there is a round box, I), firmly attached to it, whichlis for the purposeof filling the interior of a hat placed over it. This box can be filled with cellars, cuffs, or any of the small articles of apparel usually carried.

The sides A and B are provided with boxes, having curved covers E, opening outward. These covers, when closed, form a round or somewhat oval space, and between them and the central box D is' left a space of sufficient thickness to inclose a hat when the valise is shut.

Below these boxes in the sides is left an open space, F, into which the rim of the hat enters and prevents it from shaking about and becoming injured. The inside of the hatis also intended to fit upon D, so as not to allow the outside to be rubbed by the covers E.

. The boxes in A and B are sufficiently capacious to hold the articles necessary for a short journey, sothat no other article of baggage besides my improved box is required.

The box is provided with a handle, H, and

a clasp or look, G,- to retain the sides together when closed.

What I claim as my invention is A box, opening in the middle, the sides of which are hinged to the bottom, and provided with curved covered receptacles, as described, which, when the box is closed, inclose a space,

within which is the cylindrical box- D, sub

stantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
