TRAVELlNG-BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 476,598, dated J une '7, 1892.
Application filed November 5, 189].. Serial No. 410,973. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern/f Be it known that l, ASHLEY BANoRorT, a citizen of the United States ot' America, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traveling-Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in traveling-bags.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective traveling-bag which consists of a bottom portion, to which two longitudinal sections forming the cover are hinged, said sections carrying a series of compartments, while the body of the receptacle has a larger compartment containing a hat-box, which is supported above the bottom by means of strips, the cover of the hat-box being centrally apertured and hinged at a central point, so that the end portions of the cover may be elevated to have access to the compartments between the outer walls of the receptacle and cylindrical casing formed therein; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying' drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view showing the traveling-bag in dotted lines closed and in full lines open, divers parts being broken away to show interior constructions. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the dotted line c fc of Fig. l. Y
A refers to the base or body portion of the bag, which is rigid and provided on its interior with ledges or strips a a., upon which rests an opensended box or receptable B, which forms the hat-box, the inner cylindrical portion b being secured to the box in any suitable manner, and the upper edge of this cylindrical portion is curved to correspond with the curve of the rim of a hat. A coveror iiap b rests on the upper edge of the part b and tits snugly within the box B to cover the space in said box beyond the part b, so that this space may be utilized for packing purposes, said lia-ps being adapted to be raised to permit access to either end ot the box B. The cover b is hinged in any suitable manner to the stiening strips or pieces Z22, which are attached to the sides of the box B and the cylindrical portion b secured therein.
To the body A of the receptacle are hinged two sections O and O', which form the cover, said sections being divided into compartments c, c', c2, and c3, which are provided with hinged covers and catches for holding them closed. One or more of these compartments may be subdivided into smaller compartments, as shown in the compartment c.
The upper part of the body of the receptacle is provided with shoulders, upon which the end pieces of the sections C and C rest when said sections are.closed, and the section O has a projecting strip c4, which is adapted to overlap the adjacent section. Catches and a top lock are provided, as well as straps and a handle.
The device hereinbefore described provides a space beneath the hat box or receptable B, and said receptacle can be removed or placed at either end of the traveling-bag, as may be desired, and can be slid upon the strips a a without in any manner disturbing articles placed in the bottom of the valise.
In a traveling-bag thus constructed the compartments are readily accessible, and such articles that may be placed therein can be reached quickly.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide trunks with covers or tops made in two sections and divided longitudinally; also, that it is not new to provide a trunk with hinged tops divided into suitable compartments, and I do not claim such construction as my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, is*
l. In a traveling-bag or valise, the combination of a body portion having longitudinally-divided covers hinged to the sides thereof, the ends of the body portion being cut away to provide shoulders, the hinged tops or sections having projecting portions adapted to abut against said shoulders when the inner edges rest upon the upper edges of the sides, a projecting strip c4, adapted to overlap the edges of the adjacent section, and a handle secured centrally to the section of the cover carrying the strip e4, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a traveling-bag or valise, of a body portion A, having swinging or hinged covers secured to the longitudinal edges thereof, strips d a, attached to the interior of the body portion a slight distance above the base thereof, a receptacle B, adapt- ASHLEY BANCROFT. Witnesses:
