B. WITTBBORG.
COMBINED TRUNK AND DRESSING CASE.
7 No. 566,262. Patented Aug. 18, 1896 BY Z ATTOI? .9.
UNITED STATES ERNEST WVITTEBORG,
COMBINED TRUNK A SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed o e 30, 1895.
OF BRENHAM, TEXAS.
ND DRESSING-CASE.
Patent No. 566,262, dated August 18, 1896.
Serial No. 567,392. on model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST WITTEBoRe, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brenham, in the county of Washington and State A of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Trunk and Dressing-Case, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a combined trunk and dressing-case of that class in which the body of the trunk is provided with drawers for storing the various articles, while the lid of the trunk is connected to one end of the body of the trunk and provided with a looking-glass and compartments for storage of articles; and the invention consists of a combined trunk and dressing-case in which the body of the trunk is provided with a number of drawers and in which the lid is connected at one end bya hinged strap with one end of the body of the trunk, so as to be adapted to be moved into position for closing the body and to be supported in upright position on the same in line with the bottom, so that it forms a proper support for a looking glass, shelf, and the like.
The invention consists, further, of certain other features of construction and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved combination trunk and dressing-case shown in closed condition and standing on one end. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, showing the trunk with the lid supported in vertical position on one end of the body of the trunk to form a dressing-case; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical transverse section on line 3 3, Fig. 2, drawn on a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of the trunk, which is constructed in the usual manner, the corners being reinforced by metallic corner-pieces a a. In the body of the trunk a number of drawers B are arranged, which are provided with drawerpulls b b, said drawers being guided in suitable guidestrips, similar to drawers in furniture. The body of the trunk also has sev- Various articles can be readily stored in the drawers and conveniently removed by opening the same. .The lid 1) is connected with the body of the trunk by means of steel straps O C, which are hinged to one end of the body of the trunk at O and riveted to the adjacent end of the lid. The lid is likewise reinforced at the corners by metallic cornenpieces d and provided with a number of compartments D, a hinged looking-glass D", that extends over some of the compartments, and a hinged shelf E below the same for toilet articles and other accessories. The lid D is adapted to be swung by means of the hinged straps C G into position over the trunk-body, in line with the bottom of the same, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so that thereby a dressing-case is formed. WVhen the lid is placed in closed position over the trunk-body, it is connected thereto by means of leather straps f on the body, that are passed through rings f and applied by short straps f to the front ends of the lid, the lid being further connected to the body of the trunk by means of metal catches and looks, so that a reliable locking connection between the lid and body of the trunk is obtained.
When it is desired to pack the trunk, the body of the same is placed in vertical position on one end and the lid then swung into vertical position on the opposite end of the same. In this position the drawers can be readily filled with the clothing or other articles to be packed in the trunk. When the packing is accomplished, the lid is moved down again over the body of the trunk, the compartments of the same being first likewise filled and closed, so as to retain the articles in the same. The lid is then placed in position on the trunk-body and the latter turned over upon its bottom, when the lid can be readily strapped and locked to the trunk-body in the manner before described.
The combined trunk and dressing-case is further provided with leather or other handles g at the sides, so as to be conveniently carried. \Vhen the trunk is to be used as a dressing-case, it is placed in upright position on one end and the lid opened and placed in vertical position in line with the bottom of the body, as shown in Fig. 2, in which posieral compartments B, closed by doors 1).
tion the drawers of the body are readily accessible, so that the trunk can be conveniently used as a dressing-case, in connection with the looking-glass and bracket-shelf of the lid.
As the point of hinging the straps C C to the end of the trunk is located near the middle of said end, and as the straps are considerably elongated in front of the lid, it will be seen, when the lid is moved into vertical position upon the end of the trunk-body, that a considerable available surface is afforded by the said end of the trunk in front of the lid, which surface can be utilized as a sort of shelf or mantel for supporting various articles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A combined trunk and dressing-case, consisting of a trunk-body provided with drawers, a lid, and straps projecting from one end of said lid to a considerable distance in front thereof, said straps being hinged near the middle of one end of the trunk-body, so that the lid is adapted to be supported in vertical position on the rear part of one end of the trunk-body, substantially as set forth.
2. A combined trunk and dressing-case, composed of a body provided with a number of drawers, alid provided with compartments, looking-glass and a shelf, straps attached to one end of the lid and projecting a considerable distance in front thereof, said straps being hinged near the middle of one end of the trunk-body, and fastening devices at the front and rear of the body and lid for attaching the lid firmly to the body, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNEST \VITTEBORG.
