Description

J. W. HENRY. Trunk.
No. 206,730. Patented Aug. 6, I878.
WITNESSES INVENTOR: Wfiuh 7 M ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. HENRY, OF JAMESTOYVN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,730, dated August 6, 1878; application filed February 5, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. HENRY, of Jamestown, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunks, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of atrunk to which my improvement has been applied, the cover being raised and the tray swung out. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the trunk body and tray, the tray being shown as partly raised.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of trunks in such a way that the tray can be swung out to give convenient access to the interior of the trunk-body with the greatest ease, even when filled, and without changing it from a level, and without disturbing its contents in the least.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is the trunk-body, to which is hinged the cover B, in the usual way. The cover B is provided with a till, 0, and is supported, when raised, by a jointed bar, D. To the inner side of the upper part of the ends of the trunkbody A are attached cleats E, to support the tray F when in place. To the forward ends of the sides of the tray F are pivoted the ends of a pair of bars, G, the other ends of which are pivoted to the upper middle parts of the sides of the trunkbody A. To the middle parts of the sides of the tray F are pivoted the upper ends of a pair of bars, H, the other ends of which are pivoted to the upper part of the sides of the trunk-body, near their ends. The upper ends of the pair of bars G are bent upward slightly, and the lower ends of the pair of bars H are bent downward, so that their upper parts may be nearly parallel with the sides of the tray F when the said tray is swung out. \Vith this construction the tray F can be easily swung out of or into the body of the trunk by taking hold of either end, and the bars G II will keep it level through its whole movement, so that its contents will not be displaced or disturbed. The tray, when swung out, also serves as a table to lay articles upon when paekin g or unpacking the trunk.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination, with the body A, having the cleats E and the tray F, of the bars G ll, pivoted to said body and tray, the upper ends of bars G being bent upward, and the lower ends of bars ll beingbent downward, as shown and described.
JOHN WILLTAH HEN RY.
