N. J. HALLBERG.
PROVISION OR LUNCH BAG.
Patented 001:. 4.1887.
INVENTURI N. PETERS, Phokwumngnphzr, Waahingtun, D (L UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NILS Jonsson HALLBERG, or OsTERZisEN, SVENSTA, SWEDEN.
PROVlS ION OR LUNCH BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,866, dated October 4, 1887.
Application filed J nne 24, 1887. Serial No. 242,365. (No model.) Patented in Sweden March 22, 1886, No. 484.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NILs JoNssoN HA'LL- BERG, a subjectpf the King of Sweden, and a resident of Osterisen, Svensta, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Provision or Lunch Bags, (for which I have been granted a patent in Sweden, No. 184, dated March 22, 1886,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lunch or provision bags for carrying food when traveling, my
bag having the form exteriorly of an ordinary valise or traveling-bag. My invention will be hereinafter fully described, and its novel features carefully defined in the claims.
In the drawings which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side View or elevation of my improved bag as it appears when closed, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of same on line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bag as it appears when open, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of same on line 44 in Fig. 3. The bag is composed of two sections or halves, 1 and 2, hinged together in the manner of an ordinary valisc (at a a in Fig. 3) and provided with handles 1) b, for convenience of carrying it. i
One half or section, 1, of the bag is divided longitudinally by a partition, A, into two compartments, B and O. In the compartment 0 is arranged what I call a service-box, D, which is mounted to swing on pivots E E at its ends. The box D is divided into small compartments F F by cross-partitions, (see Fig. 3,) and in these compartments, one or all, may be set receptacles G G, which have flanged upper margins that take over and rest upon the tops of the walls of compartments F. The boxes G serve to contain food of any kind. The entire service-box D is covered by a lid, H, which is hinged at its edge (at c in Figs. 3 and 4) to the side wall of box D, and which has a marginal drop-flange that takes over the edges of'said box all around. This lid H lies close down on the flanged tops of the receptacles G. r
In Fig. 3 I have, for purposes of illustration, broken away a part of the lid H at the left of the figure, thus disclosing two of the compartments F empty, and one containing a receptacle, G.
The object in pivotally mounting the service-box D is that it may be automatically righted, or turned right side up, when the bag is opened. For example, when the bag is closed and rests on its bottom, as in Fig. 2, the box D stands upright or right side up, and in order that it may retain that position automatically when the bag is opened (see Fig. 4) I couple to it at its end and at a point above the point E a link I, the other end of which is coupled to the other section, 2, of the bag. Then, when the bag is opened, the link I serves to right the box D, or, rather, to maintain it right side up during the opening of-the bag. I usually employ two of these links I, one at each end of the bag, as seen in Fig. 3, but one will serve.
The non-partitioned half or section 2 of the bag and the compartment B in section 1 are by preference provided with rabbeted frames K, to receive lids, should such be required.
The object of the partition A is in part to prevent the lid H from being thrown up accidentally when the bag is closed, and itis made of the arched form shown, in order that the box D may swing in under it and yet stand so close up under it that the cover H cannot rise up.
Having thus described my invention, 1. claim 1. A bag consisting of two sections or parts hinged together, and one section or part furnished with a pivotally-mountedservicebox, said box connected or coupled to the other section of the bag by a link, whereby the box is maintained in an upright position when they bag is opened, substantially as set forth.
2. A bag consisting of two parts or sections, 1 and 2, hinged together, and one section or part, 1, provided witha partition, A, forming .a compartment, 0, a service-box, D, having a hinged cover, H, and pivotally mounted at its ends in said compartment 0, and said bag provided with a link, I, coupled at its one end to said box D and at its other end to the other section, 2, of the bag, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NILS Jonsson HALLBERG. Witnesses:
NERE A. ELFWING, Enns'r SVANGVIST.
