SADDLE-BAGS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,501, dated October 22, 1889.

Be it known that I, JEFF. D. EGGER, a citizen of the United States, residing `at Aberdeen, in the county of Monroe and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saddle-Bags, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in saddle-bags; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective View of my improved saddlebags, showing the bag on one side closed and the bag on the other side opened. Fig. 2 is a vertical section ofone of the bags, showing it closed.

The saddle -strap A is of the usual construction, and the bags B are secured to the ends of the same in the usual manner. The said bags consist of `an open front compartment C, which is constructed of sheet met-al covered with leather and provided with a top or cover D, which is adapted to close the upper end of the same. This compartment C is composed of the back a, the bottom b, and the sides c, as shown. On the bottom of the compartment C, I arrange a series of vertical partitions E, thereby forming a number of cells F, which are adapted to receive vials of medicine. To the front edge of the bottom of the said compartment C, I hinge a swinging side G, which is of proper size to entirely close the open outer side of the compartment C when To the inner face of the swinging side G, and near the free edge of the same, I secure the rails H, which form a compartment or cell adapted to receive surgical instruments or other needed articles. A swinging box I, having a series of internal partitions J, is secured to the compartment C bythe links K, having their inner ends pivoted to the sides of the said compartment and their outer ends pivoted to the ends of the box I, and it is connected to the swinging side G by the hinges L, secured to the said side, and a ledge M, projecting from the front side of the said box I. The internal partitions J in the said box form a number of cells, which are adapted to hold smaller vials than those held in the cells F. y

connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the manner of using my device and the advantages thereof will be readily understood. IVhen the device is closed, the swinging side G is turned upward against the compartment C, and the top or cover turned down and secured thereto, so as to prevent the accidental opening of the bag. When it is desired to use any of the articles in the bag, the swinging side is turned down to the position shown in Fig. 1, thereby causing the box I to swing out to the position shown in the said ligure.

It will be observed that my device provides for the transportation of a number of articles in a very small space without any danger of their being broken or damaged. The vials containing the medicine will always be in a vertical position, so that they cannot spill their contents, and the swinging box will be automatically drawn out as the swinging side is lowered, so as to permit ready access to the desired article.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

l. In a saddle-bag, the combination of the open front compartment C, the swinging side G, hinged thereto, the box I, hinged to said swinging side, and connections between the box and the swinging side, and the box and the compartment C, whereby when the said swinging side is drawn outward and downward the box will be swung out from the compartment C, as set forth.
