LOUIS KUBERSKY AND HYMIE SHROCK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMPAR'IMENT-RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1911.
Application filed May 27, 1910. Serial No. 563,789.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LoUis KUBnRsnY and HYMIE SHROCK, subjects of the Czar Nicholas of Russia, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compart1nent-Receptieles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to compartment rcceptacles and is designed to construct a receptacle of this nature whereby the city regulations requiring that garbage, ashes, and waste paper'be retained in individual receptacles, may be complied with.
This invention also contemplates the construction of a receptacle of this nature wherein any one of said compartments may be enlarged should the refuse which is adapted to be contained in that particularcompartment be greater than the refuse adapted to be contained in the remaining compartments.
WVith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a receptacle constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section illustrating the lids or covers in an elevated position; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken along the line 3--3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken along the line tt of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of a modification of the present invention; Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the bottom closure of the central compartment taken along the line 66 of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the bottom closure of the central 'compartment taken along the line 7-7 of Fig. 5.
The present invention resides in a receptacle having a plurality of transverse partitions pivoted to the base thereof, means being provided whereby said partitions may be retained in various positions, said partitions forming a plurality of compartments in said receptacle in which are adapted to be received garbage, ashes, paper, and the like. A spring actuated cover is provided for each of said compartments which may operate simultaneously or independently. The bottoms of said compartments are provided with sliding closures permitting the removal of the contents of each compartment without in any way handling the same.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings A indicates in general a receptacle, the sides 10 of which converge from the top to the bottom 11 while the ends 12 likewise converge from the top to the bottom. A plurality of transverse partitions 13 are pivoted to the bottom 11 by the hinges 14 and are provided at their upper extremities adjacent to each edge thereof with the sliding catch members 15 which are adapted to engage any one of a series of openings 16 in the sides 10, retaining the partitions 13 either in a vertical position or at an angle to the bottom.
A plurality of covers 16 are pivoted to one side 10 and are adapted to form closures for the receptacles or compartments formed by the partitions 13. These closures are adapted to be normally retained in a closed position by the springs 17 interposed between each cover and the side 10 to which the covers are pivoted. I11 order that the covers may operate simultaneously when so desired the extreme covers are provided with the sliding catch members 18 adjacent to their inner edges which are adapted to engage the eyes 19 carried adjacent to the outer edges of the central cover 16. Thus it will be seen that when the catches are in their operative position, the covers may operate simultaneously and as a single cover as desired.
In the form set forth in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 1, the extreme compartments are provided on their transverse sides wit-h the guides 20 and are provided with the slidable bottoms 21 which are provided on their outer edges with the finger pieces 22. This construction permits the contents of the extreme compartments to be removed from the bottom thereof.
In the modified form illustrated in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, the central compartment is also provided with a slidable bottom 23 which operates in the guides 24 secured on the bottom of the receptacle and is provided with a finger piece 25.
From this construction it will readily be seen that any one of the compartments may be emptied through the bottom thereof independently of the other, without in any way removing the receptacle.
A bail 2G is pivoted to the cars 29 secured to the transverse ends 12 of the receptacle A,
thus permitting the same to be transported at will.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is: c
1. lhe combination with a receptacle, of a plurality of partitions pivoted to the bottom thereof, dividing said receptacle into a plurality of independent compartments, each compartment having an opening in the bot-- tom thereof, independently operable closures for said openings, and means whereby any one of said compartments may be enlarged at the same time utilizing the same outlet or discharge opening.
2. The combination with a receptacle of the class described provided with discharge means at its bottom, a plurality of vertical partitions pivotally connected at their lower ends adjacent to the bottom portion of the receptacle and dividing said receptacle into a series of separate compartments, and means for holding the upper ends of said partition in adjusted positions whereby the size of the upper ends of the compartments formed thereby may be increased or decreased.
3. A receptacle of the class described comprising a plurality of partitions arranged therein and dividing the receptacle into end and intermediate compartments, discharge means for the compartments arranged at the bottom of the receptacle, pivotal connections between the lower ends of the partitions and the sides of the receptacle and adjustable fastening means for the upper ends of the partitions permitting movement of said partitions toward the ends of the receptacle whereby to enlarge the intermediate compartment and decrease the size of the end compartments, said partitions when arranged to decrease the size of the end compartments constituting inclined members to direct material toward the discharge of the intermediate compartment when placed in the latter, and closure means for the several compartments.
In testimony whereof we afliX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
