L. B. CRANE.
RBGEPTAGLE FOR ASHBS, GARBAGE, ee.
Patented Sept.' 20, 1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.a
LEROY B. CRANE, OE NEvv YORK, N. Y.
RECEPTACLE FOR ASHES, GARBAGE, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,316, dated September 20, 1881.
Application led August 9, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEROY B. CRANE, of the I city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Ash, Garbage, and other Refuse Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of myimprovements is to provide a cheap, strong, and convenient receptacle for garbage and ashes suitable for domestic use 5 and a further object is to afford provision in such a receptacle for keeping ashes separate from garbage and other refuse and dry. y
To this end my improvements consist in the combination, with a receptacle of the kind referred to, of a hinged cover, and corner-pieces for supporting the same, whereby the obstruction afforded by a continuous rim for supporting the cover is obviated.
They also consist in the combination, with the receptacle and a hinged cover therefor provided with a slot, of abutton afxed to the receptacle and adapted to have the slotted portion of the cover slipped over it, after which it can be turned to lap over the cover and retain it tightly closed.
They also consist in the combination, with a receptacle and a hinged cover therefor, of means preferablyconsisting of a spring for retaining the cover when open parallel with the side of the box to which it is hinged.
They also consist in the combination, with a receptacle for ashes, garbage, and other refuse divided into compartments, of separate covers for the several compartments and means for fastening them independently of each other. Pret'erablythere will also be means for securing the covers open independently of each other.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a receptacle embodying my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.
A B designate a receptacle, which may be made of galvanized sheet-iron or other suitable material, and which may be of any appropriate form, although, as shown, it is rectangular. It may be constructed .after any approved method of manufacturing kindred articles, and prefer- (No model.)
ably will have a downwardly-extending rim, a, at the bottom. It may be provided with handles b, for convenience in lifting it, and its corners may be protected bylags or strips of wood, c, secured in place by straps ot' metal, or otherwise. As here shown, itis divided into two compartments, A and B, by an upright partition, C, which is secured in place by rivets or other suitable means.
D designates covers, which are hinged to opposite sides of the receptacle and swing toward the partition C in closing the receptacle and away from it in opening the receptacle. When closed these covers may tit within the top edge of the receptacle, and they are supported by corner-pieces d, which are secured to the walls ofthe compartments of the receptacle by riveting or otherwise.
E E designate fastening devices for the covers, consisting of plates E, which extend from opposite sides of the partition C, and buttons E', pivoted to said plates. On the top of the plates E are projections e, and in the covers are slots f, which, when the covers are closed, tit around the projections e, and thereby stay and brace the covers sidewise. When the covers are thus closed the'buttons E are turned across the covers and serve to retain them closed.
Fastened rigidly to thecovers, and surrounding the hinge-pins thereof, arepolygonal projections y, and impinging against such projections are springs h, which are secured to the outer sides of the walls of the receptacle. When the covers are closed the springs lL bear against one side of the projections g, and exert a tendency to retain the covers closed, and are sufficient for this purpose in the ordinary use of the receptacle, though perhaps insufficient while it is being moved from place to place. When the covers are opened the springs It bear against another side of the projections g and retain the covers close to the adjacent sides of the receptacle, so that they will not Hap or swing about while the receptacle is being emptied. Catches might be used in lieu of these projections and springs for holding the covers open. One of the compartments may be filled with ashes, and the other with garbage and other refuse, and the covers of each may be opened and closed independent-1y of each other.
IOO
The contents of the receptacle may always be kept dry, and hence much eftluvia which would ensue from exposing them to rain is obviated.
The receptacle is cheap, strong, and durable, as well as convenient, and the corner-pieces offer little obstruction to dumping out the contents of the receptacle.
Handles z' may be pivoted or swiveled to the covers D, so that they may be raised up and grasped to lift the covers, and maylie against the covers at other times.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a receptacle for ashes, garbage, and other refuse, of a hinged cover and corner pieces for supporting the same, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a receptacle for ashes, garbage, and other refuse, and a hinged cover therefor provided With a slot, of a button affixed to the receptacle for fastening the cover, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with a receptacle for ashes, garbage, and other refuse, and a hinged cover therefor, provided with a slot, f, of the plate E, the projection e, and button E', substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with a receptacle for ashes, garbage, and other refuse, and a cover therefor, of means for retaining the cover parallel With the side when open, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. The combination, with a receptacle for ashes, garbage, and other refuse, and a cover therefor, of polygonal projections g and springs h, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. lhe combination, with a receptacle'for ashes, garbage, and other refuse divided into compartments, of separate covers for the several compartments and means for fastening them independently of each other, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
LEROY B. CRANE.
