Description

M. SGHWARZ & J. S'POHR-Ij Cigar-Box.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARCUS SOHWARZ AND JOHN SPOHR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO JULIUS BLANKENSTEIN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,189, dated January 7, 1879 application filed September 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, MARCUS ScHwARz and JOHN SPOHR, both of the city, county,
and State of New York, have invented new .holding the lid or lids of a box constructed with a spring hinge and catch in an upright position when opened, so as to prevent strain upon the hinge.
Our invention consists in placing a guard or stop, E, upon the anterior edge of the lid or lids in such boxes, so as to meet the side or end of the box when the lid is opened, and thus interrupt the action of the spring and hold the lid upright.
On one of the outer sides of the box, in line with the top and opposite the partition, is fast ened a spring-catch provided with a lip on the To the lower side of the two lids and over the said lip of the catch are fastened two pieces of sheet metal, provided at their outer ends with two hooks, which are so formed that they fit. over the lip of the catch when the lids are closed.
By this arrangement the two lids are held securely to the boxes, as the aforementioned spring-catch serves, by aid of the lip and the hooks, automatically to perform the desired result. By pressing on the top and the outer side of the sprin g-catch the lip will be released from the hooks, and the lids will spring open,-
owing to the hinges being each provided with a spiral spring.
On the top and outer sides of the lids are out recesses, in which are placed and pivoted two metallic guards, which serve to hold the lids in an upright position when they are open.
In order to more fully describe our invention, we refer to the accompanying drawings, of which 7 Figure 1 is a side view of a compound box embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a side view with the lids of the box raised. Fig. 3 is a plan view, representing the lids closed, with part of the lids broken away.
A is a box with partition a. B B are the lids, hinged to the box A by aid of the hinges G (J, with spiral springs d 01. E E are the two metallic guards placed in the recesses f f in the two lids, and are pivoted by a screw or rivet, g, to the same: H is the spring-catch, with lip 11, fastened by rivet m to the box A. N N are the two sheet-metal pieces, fastened by rivets r r to the lids. W W are the hooks on the end of the pieces N N.
Having thus described our invention, we desire to claim- The herein-described box, constructed with the usual bottom and sides, partition, springlids, and fastening device provided with the guard E, as shown and described.
