Be itknown that I, CHARLES H. AMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in hinge devices for the covers of cans, and more particularly to means for hinging the covers of ash or garbage cans to the body portions thereof.

The object of my present invention is to provide simple and efiicient means for removably connecting the hinge of a receptacle cover to the body of the receptacle.

A. further object is to so construct hinge devices for the cover of a receptacle that the upward movement of said cover will be limited and so that the cover can be wholly removed from the receptacle when it is desired to empty the receptacle and easily replaced on the receptacle in hinged relation thereto.

Vfith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as here inafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a portion of an ash receptacle showing an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the hinge with the cover raised. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the cover lowered, and Figs. 4; and 5 are detail perspective views illustrating the hinge.

My improved hinge comprises a plate or strip 4 provided with arms 5--5 suitably spaced apart and a bail 6 constructed at its ends with L-shaped arms 7. The outwardly projecting members 8 of these L-shaped arms of the bail are pivotally connected with the arms 55. The plate or strip 4 with its arms 55 constitutes one member of the hinge and is secured by means of rivets or otherwise to the edge of the cover 3, while Specification of Letters Patent. the other member of the hinge consists of the bail 6 with its L-shaped arms and is carried by the hingemember which is secured to the cover. The depending members 9 of the bail or hinge member 6 and also the connecting portion of said bail or hinge member are provided with flanges 10-11.

A bracket 12 is secured to the stiffening rim 2 below the upper edge thereof and is spaced from the face of said rim by means of lugs 13 on said bracket. The bowed portion 14 of the bracket 12 is provided therein with a beveled shoulder 15on which the hook-shape portion'16 of a'locking dog or keeper 17 is supported. By reason of the inclined shoulder on which the dog or keeper is supported, the, tendency of the upper or latch end of said dog or keeper is to drop toward the face of the rim 2.

In applying the cover to the receptacle, the bail or hinge-member 6 will be inserted between the bracket 12 and the rim 2. When the bail or hinge-member 6 is dropped into position, the flange 11 will rest upon the upper edge of the bracket 12 andthe flanges 10 of the member 6 will be disposed at respective ends of said bracket and prevent lateral binding or displacement of said member 6 of the hinge. When the bail or hinge-member 6 is placed in position on the receptacle as above described, the connecting portion of the bail will engage the latch end of the dog or keeper 17; move it outwardly and, when said connecting portion of the bail reaches its normal position, the upper or latch end of the dog or keeper will drop into place and overhang the flange 11' of the member 6,thus locking the hinge to the body portion of the receptacle.

It will be observed that the arms 55 of the hinge-member 4 project beyond their pivotal connection with the hinge-member 6. The free ends of the arms 55 thus constitute stops to engage the hinge-member 6 and thus limit the upward movement of the cover so that when the cover is released, it will drop by gravity.

When the receptacle is to be emptied, it is desirable that the cover shall be removed. To accomplish this the operator will move the dog or keeper 17 out of engagement with the bail or hinge-member 6, when the latter can be released from the receptacle and the cover, together with both members of the hinge, removed from the receptacle.

When the cover is applied to the receptacle and then permitted to drop into place, there will be a tendency by the cover to rise or spring upwardly where it is hinged to the body of the can, due to compression of air in the receptacle, but this tendency is promptly checked and in fact prevented by the prompt engagement of the dog or keeper 17 with the member 6 of the hinge.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-

1. The combination with a receptacle and a cover therefor, of a hinge-member permanently secured to said cover, a'bail pivotally connected with said hinge member and constituting the other member of the hinge, a bracket secured to the receptacle and adapted to receive and guide the bail member of the hinge and a keeper mounted in said bracket and adapted to engage said bail member of the hinge.

2. The combination with a receptacle and a cover therefor, of a hinge-member secured to the cover and having arms, a bail pivotally attached to said arms between the ends of the latter and constituting the other hinge-member, the free ends of the arms of the first mentioned hinge-member constituting stops to limit the opening movement of the cover, and means for removably connecting the bail member of the hinge with the receptacle. r r

3. The combination of a hinge comprising two vmembers permanently connected to gether a bracket provided with a shoulder, and a keeper mounted on the shoulder of the bracket and adapted to engage one member of the hinge. V

4. The combination with a receptacle and a cover therefor, of a hinge-member secured to the cover, a bail constituting another hinge-member and pivotally connected with the hinge-member on the cover, said bail provided at its edges with flanges, a bracket secured to and spaced from the outer face of the receptacle and engaged by the flanges of the bail member of the hinge, and a keeper mounted in said bracket and adapted to engage the bail member of the hinge.
