Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. STOFER, OF FOXBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- FOURTH TO HOWARD H. PORTERFIELD, OF SAME PLACE.
LOCOMOTlVE-TENDER-BOX LID.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,236, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed March 1, 1893. SerialNo. 464.238. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. STOFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Foxburg, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive-Tender- Box Lids; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the Ietters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the box or receptacle usually carried on the tender of a locomotive in which is placed various articles employed in connection with the engine or for storing any articles, and the object of my invention is the provision of a simple, cheap and durable box which will be of convenient shape and size for the purpose, which will permit easy access to the interior and which will positively exclude moisture or dampness, which is the most important feature of my invention.
To attain the desired objects the invention consists of a box, case or receptacle having the upper portion inclined to a point or apex with the Opening on one side and a lid hinged to one side of the apex of the. top and provided with a flange for shedding the water or moisture, and the invention further consists in certain details of construction all as will appear herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the box applied in position on the tender. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the box detached With the lid open and showing the stops on the hinges, and Fig. 3 represcnts a transverse sectional view of the box.
My novel box, case or receptacle A, is placed in the inner or forward portion B, of the tender and is of substantially rectangular shape in the body, with the ends having the inclined upper edges O, meeting in a point or apex D, and the hinged cover E and strip F are secured to the inclined edges and form a peaked roof. The lid or cover E is preferably made of sheet metal although this is not positively necessary and the lower edge laps over the month of the box and the upper edge is formed With the downward inclined fiange F' which causes the upper portion of the cover to lap over and cover the apex of the box and thereby absolutely prevent the entrance of moisture, and to the inclined flange and the strip are secured the hinges G, thus hinging the strip back of the apex of the box and the hinges areprovided with knobs or stops G' which prevent the lid from contacting with too great force when thrown back, as is evident. It will thus be seen that the box is of simple, cheap and durable construction, it permits easy access and positively prevents the entrance of moisture or dampness to the interior, thus making the box a practical and useful accessory for the locomotive.
I claim as my invention- 1. A box or receptacle of the character described, having the mouth or Opening and the strip to one side thereof, and the cover having the fiange hinged on the Strip to one side of the mouth and forming a shed to prevent entrance of moisture to the box.
2. A box or receptacle of the character described having the ends formed With inclined edges, the strip secured to one of the edges, and the cover hinged to the strip to one side of the mouth of the box and provided with the inclined flange, for the purpose described.
3. A box or receptacle of the character described, having the inclined top portion, the
cover having the inclined fiange, and the hinges secured to the cover and top of the box, and said hinges having stops or abutments, for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A., STOFER. Witnesses:
