CRACKER-BOX..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,110, dated September 19,1893.
Serial No. 437,754, (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, JAMES C. LOUGHRY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Greensburg, in the county of W'estmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Cracker-Box, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cracker-boxes adapted to perform the unitary function of atrausportation and display box, and consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of the parts thereof as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide a box of the character set forth which will avoid the transfer of crackers from one box to another after transportation and for the purpose of display of the same, by the employment of a single box having a cardboard side concealed during transportation by a removable cover which is detached and the cardboard replaced by a plate of glass for the purpose of display.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective View of the improved box shown in condition for transportation. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the box as adapted for display purposes. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the box, as shown in Fig. 1.
Similar' numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a box of any preferred form of construction, having ends 2, and a hinged cover 3. The said ends are connected by permanentlysituated upper and lower strips 4 and 5, and the inner opposing sides of the front portion of the ends 2, adjacent to the strips 4 and 5, are formed with vertical grooves 6, in which is fitted during transportation a strip of card board 6X as shown in Fig. 3 and forms the front of the box.
When the box is used for display purposes, the strip of card board 6X is removed and a plate '7, of glass is substituted therefor. Be-
. tween the strips 4 and 5 is mounted a removable board or strip 8, which is secured in position during transportation but may be quickly disconnected when it is desired to thereby reveal the contents of the box through the plate 7 of glass. During transportation the board or strip 8 is fastened in position in front of the strip of cardboard 6 and between the strips 4 and 5, asshown in Fig. 1,t0 thereby provide a closed containing receptacle; and when the said box has reached its consigned destination, the said board or strip 8 may be quickly removed and the transporting box thereby converted into a display-box. The fastenings for the board or strip 8 are few in number, as one nail or screw 9 at each side will answer all purposes, and thereby make it easy for the removal of said board or strip when so desired.
It will be seen that the device herein set forth will avoid the employment of a multipl-icity of boxes, and the transfer of the contents of one to another, and the troublesome delay and inconvenience arising therefrom. In the first instance a plate of glass will be shipped to the merchant, which can be kept on hand and used in successive boxes as will be readily understood.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The herein described box designed for both transportation and displayr purposes, having all of its walls closed and provided with a hinged top, and having its exterior front Wall composed of two stationary longitudinallydisposed strips 4 and 5, and a removable board 8 fitting in and closing the space between the said stationary strips, the ends of the box in rear of the strips 4 and 5 being provided with grooves for the purpose, substantially as described. Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES C. LOUGHRY.
