Description

Patented Mar'. ",1902.
iirren raras errar trice;
JAMES F. MCGOWAN, OF CAMDEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
Forme cox.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,073, dated March 11, 1902.
Application tiled July/12,1901.
To LZZ whom, twenty concern.-
Beit known that I, JAMES F. MOGO'WAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Camden, in `the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes g and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shipping-crates, and relates more particularly to that class employed for shipping live poultry.
The invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby a shipping-case may be folded compactly and will take up but very little space when the same is returned to the shipper.
The invention further contemplates to construct a crate of the above-described character that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and comparatively1 inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the crate in a folded position. Fig. l is a perspective view of my improved crate as it appears when set up. Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. t is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the crate, showing the trough and the operation of same.
In the drawings the reference-numeral l indicates the bottom of the crate, having hinged sides 2, which are formed in two sections, the upper section of which is indicated by reference-numeral 3 and forms the cover. Hinges 4c connect said sections. These sections have Serial No. 68,020. (No model.)
beveled walls 5, which are formed and extend at right angles to one another.
The reference-numeral 6 indicates hooks arranged to one of the sections 3, said hooks being adapted to engage in an eye 7, arranged on the opposite section 3, serving to form fastening means for folding the crate.
The reference-numeral 8 indicates hinged end pieces, the latter folding inwardly and snugly engaging the side of the trough 9, said trough being provided with a sliding lid IO, which extends over the trough 9 and through one of the hinged sides 2, as shown in the drawings.
The reference-numeral Il indicates wirenetting, which is secured to the four sides and top of the crate.
The operation of my improved crate is as follows: In order to knock down the crate, the hooks 6 are disengaged from the eyes 7, the sections 3 being then allowed to bend over upon themselves by reason of the hinges 4f. The end pieces are then allowed to fold inwardly upon the bottom of the crate. Then in this position, the hinged side pieces2 and sections 3 will fold over upon the side pieces 8, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and in side elevation, as shown in Fig. 2f of the drawings.
y The-many advantages obtained by the use of my improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
IIaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A folding crate comprising a bottom, hinged side'pieces 2 mounted thereon, cover-sections 3 hinged to said side pieces, the end pieces S hinged to the bottom in a plane below the lower hinged edges of said pieces, a tank 9 resting on the upper surface of the bottom of the crate, the inner free longitudinal edge of each end piece 8 designed, when folded, to bear against the opposite endsof said tank,
a cover having anged edges tted over the In testimony whereof I have hereunto aftank, the ou'texl end of said cover passing xed my signature in the presence of two subthrough a slot in one of the side pieces, bent scrbing Witnesses.
at right angles and engaging the outer face JAMES F. MCGOWAN. 5 of the side piece, said folded sides adapted to Witnesses:
fold over the end piece and over said cover, JOHN GROETZINGER,
all as shown and described. M. HUNTER.
