SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,964, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed August 23, 1888. Serial No. 283,573. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO ROENSCH, of Habelschwert, Germany, have invented Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following 5 is a specification.
The object my invention is to so construct the ends of paper boxes that. said ends may be folded to form a substantially air-tight closure to the box ends, which ends may be to readily opened and closed to permit access to the contents of the box.
The invention consists in the details of improvement that are more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents a box, which may be of suitable construction and made of any desired material-such, for instance, as paper or pasteboard. In the drawings, the box A is rectangular, and-it may be provided with any suitble bottom. All the sides of the box A are creased or bent on the line a, near one end, so
that the material above said line may be folded, as presently shown. I) is the front of the box. 6 are the sides thereof adjacent to the front, andi is the back of the box, the
5 part of said back above the line a becoming the cover proper of the box, as hereinafter shown. The front b of the box above the crease a does not extend as high as the sides 8 and the back 1'. (See Fig. 2.) The front b is creased diagonally on the lines b 12 that extend from the ends of the line a to a point on the edge d, where they meet forming a triangular field b as shown in Fig. 2. The
sides 6 are each provided with a crease f, that l 15 extends from the end of the crease a, where it meets the back 'i, diagonally upward to the upper front corners c of the sides 6, as in Fig. 3. On each side e of the box a line h extends horizontally from the edge d of the front b to a point 72, 111 the line f. The sides 6 are fur ther creased vertically on a line g, that extends from the point 7L2 in the line f to the upper edges of the sides 6, as shown in Fig. 3.
In closing the box the sides 6 e are first folded inward on the line a, so that the lines g g and h It will come near together, the corners e 6 coming about under the corners i '6 as in Fig. 1. When the sides 6 e are being thus folded, the front 1), above the line a, will fold on the lines 6 into a double-thickness triangle, forming a flap of the field I), as shown in Fig. 1. The topvi is now laid down on the end of the box to inclose the sides 6, and the triangular flap b is folded over said top 2', as in Fig. 4, or into it.
With the above construction of box-cover a label or other piece of paper may be pasted over the flap b, when the cover is closed, to assist in excluding air and holding the cover closed.
It will be seen from the above construction that there are no cuts in the cover, but that it is in one piece of material with the boxbody. Therefore substantially no air can enter between the sides of the coveror the box. The cover may be opened at any time to permit access to the contents of the box, and when it is again closedthe air will be practically excluded from the box, thus making an adjustable cover that is substantially airtight.
Boxes provided with my improvements may be used to contain articles that heretofore could not be kept in paper boxes on account of the air that passed into the box through the 8 5 cover or through cuts in the box'that Were necessary to form a cover.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is 1. A box composed of the front I), having 0 the crease-line a, and sides 2, having crease-lin e a, and diagonal crease-lines f extending from opposite corners thereof, horizontallines 72, and vertical lines g, both of which lines 9 and h meet in the line f, and the back 2', having 5 crease-line a, the sides 6 folding inward toward each other, the lines 9 h on said sides coming near each other, the back i folding upon the sides 6, substantially as described.

A box composed of the front 1), having crease-lines a Z1 forming a triangular field or flap b the sides 6, having crease-line a and diagonal crease-lines f, extending from oppoe, and the flap b folding over upon the back site corners thereof, horizontal lines h and 2', substantially as described. vertical lines g, both of which lines 9 and h meet in the line f, and the back 2', having HUGO ROENSCH. 5 crease-line a, the sides 8 folding inward to- \Vitnesses:
