UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. VAGNITZ,
OF DAYTON, OHIO.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,047, dated August 28, 1900.
Application filed May 31, 1900.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. VVAGNITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in paper receptacles, and comprises in more specific terms a square paper. box which is especially adapted for millinery use to contain hats, bonnets, and other articles usually purchased at millineries.
The object of the invention is to provide a millinery or hat box the body and cover of which are, constructed of a single blank of paper and which is inexpensive.
Precedinga detailed description of my invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my-improved millinery box, showing the coverflaps thrown back out of the way and the box in a condition to receive a hat or other article. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the box closed. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view'of the box. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of two adjacent ends g f two of the cover-flaps on the line as a: of
In a detailed description of my invention similar reference characters indicate corre sponding parts in the drawings.
The blank is cut in outline substantially as is shown in Fig. 4., with two oblong rectangular panels 1 1 and two adjacent panels 2 2, the lower ends 3 of which are of triangular shape, and the lower ends 4 of panels 1 terminate in square outlines. The upper ends 5 of all said panels are uniformly rounded, and each of said upper ends is provided with eyelets 6. The lower ends of the rectangular panels 1 have each two eyelets 7, and the lower triangular ends of the adjacent panels each has a single eyelet 8. One end of the Serial No. 18,505. (No model.)
ceptacle on the score-lines 12, and the bottom of the receptacle is formed by bending the lower ends 3 and 4 inwardly on the scorelines 13. The lower ends 4 of the sides 1 are first bent inwardly on their score-lines 13 and overlap the edges of each other with the eyelets 7 in line. The triangular ends 3 of the adjacent panels are folded over on their scorelines 13 to inclose the ends 4 of the adjacent panels, the eyelets 8 being thus brought each in line with one of the eyelets 7. When the ends of the blank are thus folded to provide the bottom, as before stated, each of the eyelets 8 comes in line with the adjacent eyelets 7, and a string or tape 14. is passed.
through said eyelets 7 and 8 and tied on the inner side of the bottom to maintain the bottom-flaps in position. The cover-flaps 5 are provided with oblique score-lines 15, along which the rounded edges of said flaps are bent to provide four strengthening ribs 17, as shown in Fig, 2. When the edges of the cover-flaps are bent upon the score-lines 15, each of said flaps is given a triangular shape. The ribs 17 when the cover-flaps are folded inwardly provide substantial means for strengthening the cover of the receptacle at four points, and each flange or rib 17 of said cover-flaps forms an abutment for the adjacent flange or rib 17, and thereby each of the triangular flaps 5 is prevented from moving down into the mouth of the box.
The rounded edges 18 are very important and essential features of the blank, for the reason that when the ribs 17 are formed thereby they present a curved or round edge 18, that is not liable to bend over in handling the box, as would be the case if the ends of said ribs 17 were pointed or cornered.
The inner ends of the triangular flaps 5 meet wh 1.. closed, and the mouth of the box or re eptacle is thus completely closed, and, as before stated, said triangular cover-fiaps are maintained up in a level position by the ribs 17. A string or tape 19 is passed through the eyelets 6 in opposite directions. A single knot 21 is then tied in a double portion of said tape to form a loop 22. The free ends of said tape are then drawn on, and this draws down the cover-flaps 5 to the position seen in Fig. 2. When the said cover-flaps are drawn to this position, a single knot 23 is tied in the tape, and the free ends of said tape are then tied to the loop 22, and a handle 2t is thus formed of the tape, by which the box may be conveniently carried.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A paper box and the cover therefor, constructed of a single blank or sheet of paper with upright walls, and having a square form in cross-section, the cover consisting of four triangular flaps folding over from opposite sides of the box and having strengtheningribs that extend inwardly from each corner of the box which maintain said triangular cover-flaps in a level position.
2. A paper box and the cover therefor, constructed of a single blank or sheet of paper with upright walls, and having a square form in cross-section, triangular cover-flaps folding over from four opposite sides, the adjacent edges of said cover-flaps being provided with oblique score lines to provide four strengthening-ribs which extend from the corners of the box inwardly, and a tape for drawing the said cover-flaps over the month of the receptacle and maintaining-them closed, said tape also providing a handle for said box, substantially as described.
3. Apaper box andcover, constructed of a single blank or sheet of paper, and being of a square form in cross-section, the four walls consisting of a single thickness of paper, the bottom being formed from square and triangular flaps, the cover being formed of uniformly-rounded flaps with oblique score-lines which provide four triangular flaps, the said score lines providing strengthening ribs which extend from the four corners of the box, and the edges of said strengthening-ribs being rounded, and means for securing the bottom-flaps and the cover-fiaps,substantially as shown and described.
4. A blank for a paper receptacle, the same being cut. to provide four upright sidewalls or panels of uniform dimensions, and bottom and cover flaps of different dimensions, the cover-flaps being uniformly rounded, the rounded edges of each of said cover-flaps being separated by two oblique score-lines upon which said cover-flaps are bent to provide strengthening-ribs at the adjacent edges of said flaps when they are folded over to incloso the mouth of the receptacle.
5. A blank for apaper receptacle and cover, the same being cut to provide four side walls or panels with extensions or bottom and cover flaps, the innermost two of the bottom-flaps overlapping their edges, and the outermost two of said bottom-flaps inclosing the two innermost flaps, eyelets formed in said bottomflaps, the cover-flaps being uniformly rounded and provided with oblique score lines which extend from the corners of the side panels and intersect at the outer central edges of said cover-flaps, and eyelets formed in said cover-flaps between the rounded edges thereof and the said oblique score-lines, and means for securing said bottom and cover flaps, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
6. A hat-box, constructed from a single blank of material and being of square form in cross section and having four upright walls, the bottom formed by four flaps folding inwardly from four directions and secured at their meeting edges, the cover formed by four flaps folding inwardly, the adjacent edges of said cover-flaps terminating in upturned flanges which form supports for said flaps when they are closed, and the inner portions of said cover-flaps terminating in points whereby said flaps may occupy a level position when closed, with their pointed ends meeting at a common central point.
7. A'blank for a hat-box, the samehaving four panels 1 1 and 2 2 which form upright side walls, two longitudinal score- lines 12 and 13 which provide flaps 3 and 4 which form the bottom of the box, and flaps 5 which form the cover of said box, the latter flaps having score-lines 15 which provide upturned flanges which support the said cover-flaps in a level position when closed over the mouth of the box.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. VVAGNITZ.
