GARBAGE-CAN COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug; 27,
Application filed April 20, 1910. Serial No. 556,474.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM A. AUSTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Meade, in the county of Meade and State of South Dakota, have invented cer-v tain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Can Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theaccompanying drawing.
This invention relates to refuse cans, particularly that class known as garbage, ash or waste paper, and consists in the new and peculiar construction and combination of the bail and cover as applied to the can bo-dyas shown and described and pointed out in the claims.
An object of the invention is to provide a sectional or hinged can cover, the hinges of which also form a fastening means for the bailwhich fastens the cover to the can it further object is to provide one section of the hinged cover with a plate which is secured to the inner side of one section so that when the two sections ofthe cover are closed tion and forms an odor tight joint In the drawings :Figure 1 is a top plan view of the can top showing the bail at-- tached thereto. The body, of the can 1, or other receptacle, has at its upper edge the horizontally disposed staples 2 and 3. The cover is composed of sections 4 and 4 which have the usual depending flanges 5. Hinges 6 and 7 connect the cover sect-ions together and the bail 8 forms a pintle for the hinges. The
' bail 8 is provided .with a handle 9 for the to place and which also forms a support for purpose of transporting the can from place either sectionof the can cover when one or both are opened. The bail 8 has ahook 10 to engage the staple 2 and the opposite end of the bail has a closed eyell for engaging the staple 3. A look 12 of ordinary construction isprovidedfor securely locking the can and cover together. It will be understood that the bail 8' is of sufficient resiliency owing to the formation of the handle 9 to permit the hook 10 and closed eye 11 to be sprung into the staples 2 and 3 respectively, and secure the coveraijnplace. To guard against any odorpassnlg from the can when used for garbage, I provide the plate 13 which is riveted to one of the cover sections and lies in a horizontal plane when the sections are closed andforms an odor tight joint.
The utility of the invention will be readily understood.
To lock the cover to the can it is only necessary to pass the hooked end 10 of the bail 8 in the staple 2 and the closed eye 11 through the staple 3 after which the lock 12 is fastened in the eye 11. This secures all the parts together and provides a cover which is securely held to the can. When it is desiredto remove the cover for the purpose of emptying or cleaning same, it is only necessary to remove the lock 12, when the closed eye 11 can be raised from the staple 3 and the hook 10 easily detached from the staple 2. Even with the lock detached,the eye 11 engages the staple in such manner that the can can be transported from place to place without any liability of disengagement of the cover.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character specified, a can, a sectional cover for the can, a pair of hinges for connecting the sections of the cover, one leaf of each hinge being secured to one section and the otherleaf to the other section, a bail having at its center an oft set portion forming a handle and said bail acting as a pintle for connecting the leaves ofthe hinges, and having at each end an angular portion one of which is provided with an open hook and the other with a' closed hook or eye, the can having staples for engagement by the hook and the eye, and a lock for engagement with the eye.

In a device of the character specified, a can, a sectional cover, hinges for connecting the sections of the cover, and a bail having a handle partand other parts out of I side of one of the sections by means of the rivets which secure the hinges to that sec- 110 tion, said plate adapted to extend across and .close the opening between the sections, and

In a device of the class described, the combination of a can, a cover therefor com- 5 prising two separate sections, a unitary resilient rod-like bail extending substantially diametrically .of the can, upon which the cover sections are independently pivoted, the said bail having a handle part out of 10, alinement with the parts on which the cover sections are pivoted, and depending end parts, and bail securing elements on the can in position to be resiliently engaged by the depending end parts of t'he said bail.
