Be it known that T, FREDERICK B. J ONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlcsex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention relates to an improvement in garbage receptacles.

The object of the invention is to produce an improved form of garbage receptacle more durable in character and better and simpler in construction than those heretofore used for this purpose.

To this end the invention consists in the garbage receptacle hereinafter described and particularly defined in the claims.

In the drawings illustrating the preferred form of the invention Figure 1 is a plan view of the receptacle; Fig. 2 is a view of which the left-hand half is a sectional elevation and of which the right-hand half is a side elevation; and Figs. 3, 1 and 5 illustrate details of construction hereinafter referred to.

The illustrated embodiment of the invention is described as follows This garbage receptacle is of a type adapted to be sunk in the ground. It comprises an outer shell, cover and a pail. The outer shell comprises a barrel and a cover. The barrel consists of a sheet metal drum 1 to which is secured the head 2 by the rivets 3. The drum 1 is reinforced by four longitudinal reinforcing strips 4. The head 2 is provided with an internal pail flange 5 and an external top flange 6. The head 2 and top flange 6 are braced by the webs 7. The top flange 6 is provided at one side with a'hinge flange 8 from which the ears 9 and 10 rise. This hinge flange 8 is braced by the webs 11. The ears 9 support the main cover and the ears 10 support the service cover. At the bottom of the barrel the drum 1 is reinforced with a ring 12 having an upwardly projected cylindrical flange 13 to which the lower edge of the drum 1 is riveted at 14. The ring 12 and flange 13 are further stayed by the webs 15. The barrel thus described is adapted to be sunk in the ground to the level of the top flange 6.

The barrel is provided with a main cover 16 having in its center a smaller service cover 17. The cover 16 is provided with ears 18 extended rearwardly and pivotally secured by the bolts 19 to the ears 9. The main cover 16 is provided at the edge opposite its hinges with a hand lip 20 adapted to be grasped by the hand to lift it when it is desired to remove the pail from the barrel. The central opening in the main cover 16 is circular in form and its margin is reinforced by a web 21 which extends both up and down from the cover 16 and compensates for the loss of strength due to the presence of the opening. -\Vebs 22 further serve to strengthen the main cover 16. The upper edge of the web 2lserves as a seat for the service cover 17. The outer margin of the main cover 16 is reinforced by the downturned lip 23 which serves to strengthen the main cover 16, and, in addition, cooperates with the upwardly extended lip 24 to secure an efficient closure for the barrel.

The service cover 17 is circular in form,

ribbed on its under side at 25 for strength,

provided at one edge with a hand lip 26, and has extended from its opposite edge the hinge portion 27, which is received between the cars 10 of the hinge flange 8. The bolt 28 is the pintle for this edge. Between the cars 10 there are stops 30, which serve as abutments or stops against which the edge 29 on the hinge of the service cover 17 engages when the service cover is lifted. By virtue of, this construction the service cover, when it is raised to enable one to throw garbage into the pail, stands stable in an upright position.

The service cover 17 may be raised, of course, without disturbing the main cover 16. Equally, of course, when the main cover 16 is raised, in order to take out the pail, the service cover will be raised. Unless provision, however, were made for closing the service cover when the main cover was closed, a second operation would be required to close the service cover after closing the main cover. In order to render this unnecessary and thereby to simplify the operations necessary for the use of the receptacle, interlocking connections are provided between the main cover and the service cover, operating to lock the two covers together when in elevated position. To this end the main cover is provided with two hooks 31, which are well illustrated in Figs. 3 and 1, being sections taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, showing the parts in diiferent positions. The service cover is provided with two lugs 32 projecting laterally from the hinge portion 27 and locat d in position to engage the hooks 31 whenthe main cover 16 is raised. This engagement of the projections 32 with the hooks 31 is secured by the eccentric positioning of the axes of the hinges of the covers. It will be observed by an inspection of the drawing that the axis of the hinge of the service cover 17 is'located in the same horizontal plane but somewhat to the rear of the axis of the hinge of the main cover 16, consequently when the main cover is raised, as it lifts the service cover. 17, the latter, being pivoted to the rear of the main cover, slides forwardly on the main cover and the projections 32 are carried under the hooks 31 of the main cover. When the covers are up, as shown in Fig. 3, the projections 32 engage the hooks 31. Now, after the pail has been emptied and replaced, and it is desired to close the barrel again, the main cover 16 is turned downward, and the hooks 31 thereof engaging the projections 32, draw the service cover down with it, so that both covers are closed at the same time. An incident of this construction is found in the fact that but one back stop is required for the two covers, for .since the service cover is supported in elevated position by the stops hereinbefore described, it itself forms a stop .for the main cover when the latter, too, is raised.

The garbage pail 33 is an ordinary galvanized iron pail, except as to certain features of construction concerning its ears and support on the pail flange 5. The ears 34, to which the bail 35 is secured, is illustrated in Fig. 5, including that portion shown in dotted lines. The body of the ear is provided with three rivet holes 36 by which the ear is riveted to the pail. The upper part of the ear is provided with a lip recess 37 which embraces the rolled lip 38 of the pail. This affords a strong connection between the ear and the pail, as the ear is held in position on the pail by the rivets and connected to the pail by the engagement of the lip recess 37 with the lip 38 thereof. Above the lip recess 37 is the bail hole 39 for receiving the bail. Opposite the lip recess 37 are the pail supports 40 which project outwardly from the ear and are adapted to rest upon the pail flange 5 of the barrel. The bail cars 34 are two in number. Two pail supporting ears ll are also provided which are exactly like the bail ears except that the portion of the bail ear indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5 is omitted. The garbage pail 33 is thus supported, it is seen, in the barrel above the bottom of the barrel, so as thereby to afford a communicating space between the reoaeea contents of the garbage pail and the earth exposed at the opening at the bottom of the barrel, which provides for the absorption of noisome odors.

The illustrated embodiment of the present invention is the best form in which the invention may be embodied, but it is to be understood, of course, that the invention may be embodied in other forms within the scope of the following claims 1. A garbage receptacle having in combination, a barrel, a main cover having a central opening and hinged at one side of the barrel, a service cover hinged separately at the same side of the barrel and adapted to swing down over the opening in the main cover and rest on the main cover over the opening therein, a stop for restricting the swinging movement of the covers and holding them in an upright position fully open, and means for automatically locking the covers together when they are raised together and holding them locked together in their upright position, whereby both covers may be closed by closing down the main cover.

2. A garbage receptacle consisting of a barrel, a main cover hinged at one side thereof and provided with an opening, a service cover adapted to close said opening and hinged separately so as to be capable of being opened independently of the main cover, the hinges of the service cover being located eccentrically with respect to the hinges of the main cover so that when the service cover is raised through the medium of the main cover there will be a relative sliding action between the covers, and means carried by the covers for causing them to be come interlocked when they are raised together to an upright fully-open position.

3. A garbage receptacle consisting of a barrel, a main cover hinged at one side thereof and provided with an opening, a service cover adapted to close said opening and hinged separately so as to be capable of being opened independently of the main cover, the hinges of the service cover being located eccentrically with respect to the hinges of the main cover so that when the service cover is raised through the medium of the main cover there will be a relative sliding action between the covers, and means carried by the covers for causing them to become interlocked when they are raised together to an upright fully-open position, said means consisting of a hook on one of the covers and an interlocking lug on the other cover.
