MERCHANDISE-Box.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,990, dated September 10, 1889.
Application filed July 20, 1889- Serial No. 318,156. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE EDWARD RAY-.
' by retail; and to these ends my invention consists of the novel construction and combination of parts, as will fully appear from the following description and accompanying illustrations, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved merchandise-box, showing the lid or cover open and parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line a; a: thereof. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective showing several methods of applying the lid or cover, and Fig. 4 is a modificationthereof.
In the embodiment of my invention I employ a lid or cover A, in the present instance triangular in shape and closinga correspond- 7 ing opening a in the side of the box or can B at its bottom edge, said lid or cover being hinged at said edge of box. The pintle of the hinge of the lid or cover Ais a rod or pin 0, in length equal to the width of the inner edge of the latter, and engaging eye-lugs b b on the lid and box or can. This rod or pintle is encircled by or has otherwise suitably applied thereto a spring 0, one end of which is connected to the can or box, the other end being connected to the lid or cover. The purpose of this spring is to normally retain the cover or lid tightly closed, and it will consequently effect the automatic closing of the. lid or cover after having been opened. The lid or cover A has upon its inside two edgewisedisposed cleats or guides D D,converging toward but not meeting at their outer ends, a narrow space being left between said ends, the cleats or guides thus serving in the capacity of a funnel when the lid 01' cover is swung or thrown outward and the can tilted as usual to discharge its contents, the latter flowing out. upon the lid between and concentrated by said guides or cleats, causing the same to leave or flow from the lid or cover in a narrow stream. The lid or cover of course has a knob or hand-hole or pull to permit its convenient opening and closing.
In the several modifications the same idea is carried out by the conversion of, say, half of one side of the box or can into a lid, the entire side into a lid, or the top into a lid, the application of which will be readily understood without further description.
The modification shown in Fig. 4 consists of a metallic funnel projecting from the outer end of the top of the lid. It will be seen by this attachment that in emptying the box the contents are precipitated by gravity.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The merchandise box or can having a hinged cover provided upon its inside with converging cleats or guides spaced apart at their approaching ends, said lid or cover havin g applied to its hinge-pintle a spring the action of which is to hold the lid tightly closed, substantially as set forth.
