Description

u. n. ELDER.
Show-Gases.
Patented July 8,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
DAVID D. ELDER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN eHow-CASES.
Specieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,689, dated July 8, 1873; application led May 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID D. ELDER, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Show-Gases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufeient to enable others Askilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the acompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Y Figure 1 is a top or plan view of the device embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sections in line :o a', Fig. l., the case being respectively closed and opened.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in extending the cover of a show case beyond its axis and Weighting said extension in order to assist the operation of opening and closing the cover and to keep the same in position when so opened or closed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of a show-case, and B the cover or lid thereof, both of which may be of well-known form. This cover is jointed to the body A either by hinges on the partition-strips C G or by pintles or otherwise on the side pieces of the body A, and the cover extends beyond said hinges or axis, as at D. A space, E, is left between the longitudinal partition-strip C and the adjacent side ofthe body A, and this space receives the extension-piece D when the cover is thrown up. A weight, F, is applied to the extension D, and is arranged thereon or therewith in proximity to the axis of the cover, so that When the cover is started to be thrown up the weight causes it to move automatically to its full extent, and after this to remain in said thrown-up position.
In lowering the cover it merely requires starting, and then automatically lowers or closes slowly without accelerating its speed and without coming forcibly to a stop. After being fully lowered or closed, it remains in position, without liability to open or jar, until again elevated or thrown up by human aid.
'lo accomplish these results the weight naturally requires regulation and proper application to the cover.
If desired, a bracket or shelving may be secured to the body ofthe case and elevated above the extension D as a cover or nish for the same, but the operation of the cover will in nowise be aifected thereby.
I am aware that a weight has been attached by a cord or chain to the lid or cover of a showcase, said cord or chain passing over an elevated pulley, and therefore do not claim the attachment of a weight to such lid o r cover; but,
Having described my invention, what I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rI`he show-case A, having its cover B formed A with an extension, D, beyond the axis of the cover, in combination with the weight F applied to said extension, and operating as herein set forth and for the purpose described.
Witnesses: DAVID D. ELDER.
