SAMUEL H. IMOFFITT, 0F GREENFIELD, IOWA.
AUTOMATIC DOOROPENING GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2, 1914.
Application filed November 551, 1913. serial No. 802,334.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. Morrrrr, citizen of the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of Adair and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Door Opening Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to means for guarding openings that are normally closed by doors and other closure devices.
The object of the invention is the provision of a simple and efficient guard that is connected with and actuable by a closure device so as to be placed in operative position by the opening of the closure device, and moved to an idle position by the closing of the closure device.
The invention also contemplates the provision of a construction designed to be used above a flight of steps and so arranged that when the guard is in idle position, as when the door above the steps is closed, the guard will not offer an obstruction to any one endeavoring to raise the door from a point below the same.
Other advantageous characteristics of my invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective showing a door controlling an opening above a flight of steps, as fully opened, and with my novel guard in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a perspective showing the door as partly closed, and the guard with its parts in the positions they assume incidental to the closing of the door. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section showing the door and the guard in their closed positions.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Tn furtherance of my invention, the hinged door 1 of an opening 2 above a flight of steps 3 is provided at 4 with a rod that is fixed to and extends at a right angle from the inner side of the door. The said rod 4 is provided at its outer end with a link 5 that is hinged after the manner of an elbow to the rod 4:--i. 0., in such manner that the link 5 can swing upwardly from the rod 4, but is prevented from swinging downwardly from said rod. Also in furtherance of my invention upright guard members 6 are hinged at 7 to the side walls of the opening 2, while the ends of a bailshaped guard member 8 are hinged at 9 to the side walls of said opening. In addition to the said members 6 and 8, the guard comprises members 10. These latter are pivotally connected at their outer ends to the members 6 and 8, while their inner ends are pivotally connected to a transverse rod 11. Intermediate the rod 11 and the link 5, is interposed a rigid link 12 that is pivotally connected to the rod 11 and the link 5, as illustrated.
In the practical use of my improvement, it will be manifest that a person ascending the stairs is enabled by pushing upwardly or pulling upwardly on the rod 11 to cause the door 1 and the door-opening guard to assume the fully opened positions shown in Fig. 1. Again when a person descends the stairs and pulls on the rod 11, it will be manifest that such person is enabled to close the door and to cause the guard to assume the position illustrated in Fig. 3. It will further be gathered from the foregoing, that when the closed door is grasped and raised from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 1, the guard will be unfolded and adjusted from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 1.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention, in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts, as in the future practice of the invention such changes or modifications may be made as fairly fall within the scope of my appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination of a vertically-swinging hinged door; a guard for an opening controlled by the door, said guard comprising foldable sides and an intermediate crossrod between said sides; and a connection intermediate said cross-rod and the door.
2. The combination of a vertically swinging hinged door; a guard for an opening controlled by the door, said guard comprising vertically swinging members hinged to opposite walls of said opening, a cross-bar connecting the vertically swinging members at one end of the opening, an intermediate cross rod, and members pivotally connected 5 to the vertically swinging members and the cross rod; a rod fixed to and extending laterally from the inner side of the door, a link pivoted to the cross rod of the guard, and a second link pivoted to the first-named link and connected to an elbow joint with the {0 rod on the door.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL H. MOFFITT. Witnesses:
