To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB SAARI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Annandale, in the county of Wright and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object to provide an improved hinge, and especially a hinge adapted for use on doors for hay lofts, or on doors that open up under the eaves of the building, all as hereinafter pointed out and dened in the claims.

As is well known, it is very desirable to have the track for a hay carrier located along the gable of the do this, it is necessary to have the doors open up to the gable of the barn. When the improved hinge is applied to doors of this character, the doors are permitted to swing wide open and stand in a position outside of the eaves of the building, thereby leaving a clear passage the full width of the door opening, which is very desirable in carrying large loads of hay.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate Vthe invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation, showing the end of a barn, with some parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line x2 x2 of Fig. l, with some parts broken away and other parts4 moved into a different position; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line x3 :1:3 of Fig. l on an enlarged scale, and with some parts broken away.

The numeral 1 indicates a portion of one end of a barn, having projecting eaves 2, door opening 3, opening into the hay loft, a pair of swing doors 4 and 5 for closing said opening 3, and-a track 6 for supporting a hay carrier (not shown). The doors 4 and 5 are supported from the barn by a pair of the improved hinges. Said hinges are made in two sectionsv 7 and 8. Each section 7 and 8 is outwardly offset at 9 and l0, respectively, and are connected together by 4a pintle l1. The total length of said offset portions 9 and 10 is equal, l

at least to the width of the eaves 2, so as to permit the doors 4 and 5 to swing outside of the eaves, as best shown in Fig. 2.

The section 7 of the improved hinge is secured to the barn l, by a nutted bolt l2, and the offset portion 9 of said hinge section 7 is supported by a suitable brace 13, said brace 13 being secured thereto at its intermediate portion by rivets 14 and having its ends secured to the barn l by nutted bolts 15. The section 8 of the improved hinge is secured to one of said doors by a nutted bolt 16, and the offset portion 10 of said hinge section 8 is supported by a suitable brace 17, said brace 17- being secured thereto at its intermediate portion by a rivet 18, and having its ends secured to said door by nutted bolts 19.

The door 5 is held in its closed position by a cleat 20 secured to the door 4 by an overlapping cleat 20 secured to the door section 5, and the door 4 is held in its closed position by a hook and eye 21.

To open and close the doors 4 and 5 from the inside oi the barn, each door is provided with a flexible connection 22, having both of its ends secured to a pair of eyes 23, secured near the outside edge of each door, one of said eyes projecting on the outside and the other on the inside of said door. That portion of the connecl tion v22 secured to the eye 23 on the outside of the door, runs over a sheave 24 secured to the outside edges of the eaves 2 and runs through an opening in the barn 1. As is evident, by pulling on the flexible connections 22, the doors 4 and 5 may be either opened or closed as desired. To hold the doors 4 and 5 in any desired set position, the flexible connections 22 may be wrapped around cleats 25 secured to the inside of the barn 1, as shown in Fig. 3.

What I claim is:

The combination with a building having a door and projecting eaves, of a two part hinge supporting said door from said building, the two parts of said hinge being outwardly offset to permit said door to swing outside of said eaves, and braces for supporting the said offset portions of said hinge, substantially as described.
