Description

PATBNTED JULY 30, 1907.
I. HART.
GATE. APPLICATION FILED NOV.2'4.1906.
UIED STATES ISAAC HART, OF FINDLAY, OHIO.
GATE.
Application filed November 24,1906. Serial No. 344,944,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC I'IART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to gates and more particularly to adjustable hinges for the same, the object being to provide a hinge that will lift the forward end of the gate up as it is opened so that it will pass over any obstructions caused by the unevenness of the ground.
Another object of my invention is to provide the gate with a hinge that can be adjusted so as to lift the gate off the ground any distance desired, so as to take up any sag in the gate.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of the specification Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the gate partly in section. Fig. 2 is a section taken on lines 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the gate and post, showing a modified way of connecting the chain. Fig. i is a detail section of a portion of a gate and post showing a modified way of adjusting the chain.
Referring to the drawing A and B indicates a pair of gate-posts between which a gate C is arranged which may be of any construction desired. A pintle D is secured to the lower end of the post B over which a hingeeye E, secured to the lower end of the gate is fitted forming a hinge so that the gate can readily swing in either direction desired. A link-bar F is secured in an opening in the forward end of the bottom bar C of the gate and extends upwardly and rearwardly and has connected to its upper end a chain G which passes between the vertical strips C and through a bore B formed in the post B adjacent its upper end and is se- Speeifieation of Letters Patent.

cured therein by a pin G which passes through one of the links of the chain over the bore bearing against the post. It will be readily seen that a flexible hinge is formed and one which will lift the forward end of the gate up as the chain will wrap around the post when swung open.
In Fig. 3, the chain G is secured on a pin H, on the upper end of the strip O of the gate in a horizontal line with the bore.
In Fig. i the chain G passes through an eye I secured to the gate and has connected to its end a screw-eye .I which is arranged in the bore 13 of the post and is provided with a washer .I bearing against the post and nuts J so that the gate can be raised and lowered as desired.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have provided a very novel means for hinging a gate to a post so that it will be automatically raised up 1. The combination with a post having a transverse bore adjacent its upper end, of a gate hinged to the lower end of said post, a link bar connected to the forward end of the bottom bar of the gate, a chain carried by said link bar passing through said bore of the post, and means for securing said chain in said bore, for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a post having a transverse bore adjacent its upper end, 01. a gate hinged to the lower end of said post, a link bar connected to the forward end of the bottom bar of the gate, a chain connected to the upper end of said bar passing through the bore in the post arid a pin passing through said chain bearing against the post. for the purpose described.
