JACOB I-I. HUMBURG, OF MOUNT ANGEL, OREGON.
HINGE FOR SILO-DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July a, 191s.
Application led September 22, 1917.v Serial No. 192,659.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JACOB I-I. HUMBURG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Angel, in the county of Marion, State of Gregon, have invented a new and useful manufactured for a small cost and sold at a reasonable profit.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved hinge consisting of a pair of hingedly united Ushaped links, one connected hingedly or pivotally to the door, and the other pivotally connected to members of the jamb of the door, whereby, when the door is closed and the U-shaped links disposed so that the pivotal connection of one of the links of the jamb protrudes between and outwardly beyond a plane from the pivotal connection between the links and the pivotal connection of one link to the door, whereby the door is held in place.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved latch for the other side of the door.
In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a portion of a silo, showing the improved hinge and latch applied to the door of the silo.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3l is a similar view showing the latch released and the hinged connections partially moved in full lines and completely moved in dotted lines, showing the door swung on the inside of the silo.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the portion of a wall of a silo, which is provided with a door opening 2, and secured to the outer face of the wall and adjacent to and overlying the marginal edge of the opening to form the jamb shoulder 8, are the vertical and transverse cleats 4 and 5. Engaging the door opening and the shoulder 8 thereof is a door 6, and secured to the -outer face of the door by the bolts 7 are the vertical cleats 8 and 9, which are reinforced by the transverse rods 10. Shanks 11 of the eyes 12 extend through the cleat 8 and have the nuts 13 to secure the eyes 12 i'rmly in place. Straps 14 are secured by the bolts 15 and the screws 16 to one of the cleats 4. These straps have eyes 17. A U- shaped link 18 has its connecting arch portion rockably mounted in the eyes 17, and the straps 14 are disposed in spaced relation whereby the upper and lower arms of said U-shaped link 18 will engage said straps 14, in order to prevent movement of said link. A U-shaped link 19 has its arch mounted in the eyes 12, which are so disposed that the arms of the link 19 will engage said eyes, that is, at the points where the arms bend from the arch, thereby preventing vertical movement of the link 19. The hinged link 18 is a trifle shorter than the link 19, so as to move between the arms of the link 19. The adjacent `ends of the arms of the two links 18 and 19 are ,hingedly or pivotally united by the vertical bolt or rod 20, which has an integral head 21 at one end and a nut 22 on its opposite end, thereby preventing axial Vertical movement of said rod. When the door 6 is closed and the hingedly united links move to the positions shown in Fig. 2, the pivot of the link 18 to the straps 14 extends outwardly beyond the plane or a line @-7) between the pivot rod 20 and the pivot of the link 19 to the eyes 12, thereby holding the door closely against the shoulder 3. In order to open the door 6, the pivoted ends of the arms of both links 18 and 19 are thrown outwardly past the pivot of the link 18 to the strap 14, then the links may be moved as shown in dotted line in Fig. 3, with the door adjacent the inner face of the wall of the silo, as also shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a silo door hinge, a pair of straps spaced at a considerable interval one above the other and secured to the frame of the door opening, a U-shaped link having its arch rockably mounted in eyes of said straps, eyes spaced at a considerable interval one above the other and carried by the outer face of the door, a second U-shaped link having its vertical arch rockably mounted in said eyes, means pivotally uniting the arms of both links, said strapsY having eyes in Which the first link is mounted" beingso'cone'- structed and disposed that the pivot of the the first link in the eyes of said straps will.
protrude outwardly out of alinement With th'e'pivots fbetweenflooth links and* the pivot of the second link to thedooryto hold vthe door in close contact With a shoulder of the door opening.
2. In -a vsilo door1hinge,a pair of straps spaced ata considerable intervalone above thevother and securedto the frame of the door opening, :a vU-shaped linkahavingits arch rockably mountedy in vthe eyes ot said straps, eyesfspaced at a considerable interval one abovethe other and carried by the outer"- face-of the door, a second U-sh'aped linkhavoutwardly out of alinement Withthe pivots betweenboth links` and the pivots of the Second link to the door, to hold the door in close contact With a shoulder .of the door opening.
Inl testimony whereof I have signed my name to-this specification in the `:presence of two` subscribingWitnesses;
, JACOB H. HUMBURGr.
