To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Finn) lVoL'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.
' claimed and illustrated in the accompany- Charles, in the county of \Vinona and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had -to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved hinge and has for its primary object to provide a hinge construction whereby the door or other movable part may be swung to an open position in either of two directions, and which will also permit of the easy and quick complete removal of the door from the relatively stationary. structure upon which it is mounted.
It is a more particular object of my invention to provide a two-part hingecarried by the door, one of said parts being movable relative to the other and each part having means on one end for operative engagement with a pintle, and latch means to prevent the relative movement of the hinge parts.
I t is also a further general object of my invention to provide a hinge as above characterized whichis quite simple and durable in its construction, desirable and convenient for many different uses, and which can also be produced at relatively small manufacturing cost.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved combination. construction, and relative arrangement of theseveral parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, subsequently ing drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is an elevation showing a door equipped with my improved hinges,.the door being illustrated in its closed position;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the door swung to its open position at one side of the door opening and .also illustrating in dotted lines the door swung to an open position at the opposite side of the opening; and
Fig. 4. is a detail vertical section taken on the line 14 of Fig. 2.
My improved hinge, which I shall presently describe in detail, is particularly de signed and adapted for use in connection with those structures wherein it is desirable to frequently remove the door or gate from the structure upon which'it may be mounted,
such, for instance, as pasture gates, hog house gates, and doors or gates used upon various analogous structures However, for convenience of illustration, in the accompanying drawing I have illustrated merely the two vertical uprights or posts 5 at the opposite sides of the door opening. Upon the outer side face of each of these posts, a bracket generallyindicated by the numeral (Sis rigidly fixed by means of the screws 7 disposed through openings in the body of the bracket and'threaded into the door posts. A pair of these brackets arrangedin properly spaced relation are thus mounted upon each of the posts, and said brackets may be either in the form of castings or constructed of heavy sheet metal. Each bracket is formed with the vertically spaced horizontally disposed ears 8, in which the upper and lower ends, respectively, of a pintle 9 are fixed, said pintle being thusheld in spaced relation to the face of the bracket plate.
-10 designates the door or gate which may be of any suitable dimensions and construetion, said gate as shown being provided upon its inner face with the upper and lower horizontally extending cleats 11 which are adapted to engage at their ends in the rabbets 12 provided in the door posts 5 when the door is in its closed position. Upon the outer face ofthis .door at its vertical edges, upper and lower hinges are mounted. As thesehinges are identical in construction, thefollowing detail description of one will suflice for all. v The improved hinge includes a metal bar 13 extending horizontally upon the face of the door and rigidly fixedthereto by a plurality of screws or analogous fastening elements indicated at 14. One end of this hinge bar at the vertical edge of the door is formed with a cylindrical enlargement 15 and an inwardly curved terminal hook 16. 17 designates a second metal bar also having a cylindrical. enlargement 18 formed there on adjacent one of its ends. This enlarge ment and the enlargement 15 of the bar 13 are bored to receive the connecting bolt or pivot pin 19. The pin 19 is preferably detaehably threaded or otherwise engaged in the bar 13 so that the hinge members may be applied either to the right or left hand edge of the door. The bar 17 is likewise formed with a terminal hook 20 which, however, projects outwardly or in a reverse direction to the hook 17 on the fixed hinge bar 13. The other end of the hinge bar 14, is
curved or bent as at 21 to afford a suitable handle.
Upon the bar 13 adjacent to its inner end, a latch plate 22 is pivotally mounted as at 23 and is adapted to coact with the hinge bar 17 to hold the latter against outward swinging or pivotal movement with respect to the fixed bar 13.
In the operation of my invention, the door is first mounted at one of its vertical edges upon one of the door posts 5 by releasing the hinge bar 17 so that they may be swung outwardly to the dotted line positions seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The inturned terminal hooks 16 on the fixed hinge bars 13 are then engaged against one side of the respective pintles 9 on the door posts, and the hinge bars 17 are then moved inwardly against the face of the door and in vertical alinement with the fixed bars 13 so that the terminal hooks 20 of the movable hinge bars will engage around the opposite sides of the pintles 9. The movable hinge bars 17 are then latched and held against the door posts by means of the pivoted latch plates 22. The hinges at the opposite vertical edge of the door can then be connected in a similar manner to the pintles 9 on the other door post and the door thus securely held in its closed position as seen in Fig. 1. When it is desired to open the door or gate, the hinge bars 17 at either side edge of the gate may be swung outwardly and disengaged from the pintles 9 on one of the posts 5. The door or gate can then be swung to its open position upon the other of the door posts as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Thus, the
door may be opened either upon the right or left hand side of the door opening, which in many cases will be found of great convenience. It will also be seen that the door may be completely removed in a very expeditious manner from the structure on which it is mounted by simply disengaging all of the movable hinge bars 17 from the respective pintles. By means of the improved hinge as above described, the door is securely held in its closed position without necessitating the use of hasps, bolts, padlocks or other similar devices usually employed for such purposes. The hinge as a whole is also of relatively simple construction, strong and durable, and not liable to get out of order. The device can also be produced at comparatively small manufacturing cost and properly applied without necessitating any material alterations in the ordinary door or gate or the structure upon which it may be mounted.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred construction and relative arrangement of the several parts, it is to be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification therein and I therefore reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
WVhile I have'h'erein described my invention, what I claim is-:
1. In a hinge adapted to be used with fixed and movable parts, a pintle secured upon the fixed part, fixed and movable hinge members carried by the movable partsand having terminal hooks on their corresponding ends reversely disposed and arranged in superposed relation for operative engagement with the pintle, and means for retainingthe movable hinge member in operative engagement with the pintle.
2. In a hinge adapted to be used with fixed and movable parts, a hinge including a pintle secured upon one of said parts, a hinge bar fixed to the other part, a second relatively movable hinge bar, said hinge bars being provided with reversely extending terminal hooks for operative engagement with the pintle, and latch means to co-act with the movable hinge bar and-retain said hooks in engagement with the pintle.
