Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 19, 1917. Serial No. 169,708.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. FURGA- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amorita, in the county of Alfalfa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate- Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved gate hinge, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which will permit of the free swinging movement of the gate to open position in either direction with respect to the gate post.
It is also another object of my invention to provide a gate hinge which is exceedingly strong and durable in its construction, can be easily and quickly applied to either a wood or steel gate, and is capable of manufacture at relatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the gate in its open position; and
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4ld of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates a hollow, rectangular tube which is adapted to be arranged upon the side of the gate post indicated at P, said hollow tube being provided in its opposed walls with c0- inciding openings to receive the fastening bolts indicated at 6, whereby said metal tube may be rigidly secured to the post.
A similar rectangular metal tube 7 is also attached to the gate by means of the bars indicated at 8, which have reduced cylindrical ends 9 to extend through coinciding openings in the side walls of said tube, nuts indicated at 10 being threaded upon the cylindrical ends of said body. The bars 8 are adapted to be disposed upon the opposite sides of the vertical bar of the gate and securely fixed thereto by the bolts 11. When, however, the device is to be applied to a steel or metal gate, a U-shaped clip may be sub stituted for the spaced bars 8, as will be readily understood, the terminal portions ofv the clip extending through the corresponding openings in the metaltubes 7.
Each of the rectangular tubes 5 and 7 is provided at its opposite ends and in its top and bottom walls with openings indicated at 12 and 13 respectively. Rods 14 are provided with angularly bent end portions 15. One of the angular ends of each rod is adapted to be engaged through the openings 12 in the ends of the tubes 5 while the other angular end of said rod isengaged through the openings in the relatively opposite end of the tubes 7 which is attached to the gate. Suitable cotter pins shown at 16 are inserted through transverse apertures in the angular ends of the rods 14k to retain the same in connection with the tubes 5 and 7.
From reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, the operation of my improved gate hinge will be readily understood. When the gate is closed, the tubes 5 and 7 are disposed in substantially parallel relation. Upon the release of the gate latch, the gate may be swung in either direction, the ends of the rods 14 turning freely in the tubes 5 and 7, and the tube 7 being moved to a posi tion in alinement with the tube 5 on the gate post when the gate isfully open and disposed at one side of the roadway. It will, of course, be apparent that the gate may also be moved to any intermediate position and will be effectually supported against sagging by means of the two hinge rods 14. The hinge as a whole is relatively simple in its construction, highly convenient and serviceable in practical use, and can be manufactured at comparatively small cost. The hinge can also be easily and quickly applied to the ordinary gate without necessitating any alterations in the latter.
WVhile I have herein shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts employed, it is to be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification therein and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is A gate hinge including hollow, rectangular, metal tubes adapted to be secured to the gate post and gate respectively, a pair of rods each having its ends angularly bent in the same direction, said metal tubes being each provided at its opposite ends and in its top and bottom walls with coinciding openings, one angular end of each rod being loosely engaged through the openings in one end of the metal tube on the gate post and the other angular end of the rod being loosely engaged through the openings in the 10 relatively opposite end of the metal tube on the gate, said rod supporting the gate for swinging movement in either direction with respect to the gate post to position said metal tubes in alinement with each other.
