To all whom it may concern.
lie it known thatI, HARRY S. CABLE, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and btate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door and Gate Braces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aS will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to screen door, gate, or other swinging closure attachment, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved means for effectively bracing and taking up the sag in screen doors, gates, or other like swinging closures having an open frame, in which the parts are liable to sag from the hinge rail.
A further object of this invention is to provide improved means for clenching the terminals of the attachment to the hinge rail and mid rail of a swinging closure.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for locking the attachment against movement after the same has been adjusted to take up the sag 111 the swinging closure.
A still further object of the invention 1s to provide an improved device of the above character, which is durable and efiicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a screen door showing the improved attachment in operative position,

Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section taken on the line 3-4-3 of Fig. 1, showing the means of connecting the opposite terminal to the mid rail of the screen door.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generally indicates the improved attachment, which is adapted Specification of Letters Patent.

to be applied to a screen door or other swinging closure 2, which includes the hinge rail 3, the outer rail 1, the end rails 5 and the mid rail 6. As clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the attachment is adapted to extend diagonally from one corner of the screen door to. the opposite lower corner of that portion above. the mid rail and one terminal of the same is adapted to be socured t0 the hinge rail adjacent the upper end thereof, and the other terminals of the mid rail adjacent the outer ends thereof.
The improved attachment 1 includes a pair of separable bars 7 and 8 and the bar 7 is of greater length than the bar 8 and extends approximately the whole distance from one corner of the door to the opposite corner. The upper end of the rod 7 is bent at right angles to its body to provide an attaching portion 9, which is adapted to be received in a bushing 10, which extends through the hinge rail adjacent the upper end thereof and the hinge rail is provided with a threaded aperture 11 for the reception of the same. The bushing 10 includes a cylindrical body externally threaded and an outer annular flange 12 for engaging the outer surface of the door to limit the inward movement thereof, and to provide a wear portion, the purpose of which, will be hereinafter more fully described. The outer torminal of the attaching portion 9 is coiled to provide an enlarged head 12 which is adapted to engage the annular flange or wear portion so as to prevent the accidental removal of the bar 7 therefrom. It is to be understood that if so desired the outer terminal of the attaching portion 9 may be threaded and a suitable nut turned thereon sons to hold the same in operative position.
A staple or the like lBmay be driven into the hinge rail so as to embrace the rod 7 if so desired so as to prevent turning thereof in the bushing 10. The lower end of the rod 8 is provided with an eye 1% which is connected to the eye 15 on the eye bolt 16, which extends through the mid rail 6 of the screen door adjacent to the outer end thereof. A suitable nut 17 is turned on the lower end of the bolt so as to engage the lower surface of the mid rail to prevent accidental movement or displacement of the bolt, and washers 18 are positioned on said bolt and bear against the upper and lower edges of the mid rail. The meeting terminals of the bars 7 and 8 are provided with oppositely directed threads which are adapted to be received by a double nut 19, the bores of which are oppositely threaded.
From the foregoing deseriptionit can be seen that a screen door attachment is provided which includes a pair of rods connected to the hinge rail and mid rail having a turn buckle connection, by means of which the rods may be adjusted toward or away from each other so as to effectively take up sag?- in therdoor frame. f
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment. is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction,
proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:- 4
A brace attachment for a closure consisting of a bushing disposed in a transverse opening in the closure, a flange 011 one end or the bushing abutting one face of the closure, a rod having a portion journaled in the bushing and provided with a head impassable through the bushing and engaging the flanged end, said rod extending across the other end of the bushing, and the other face of the closure, and securing means engageable with said rod and the closure at a. distance from the bushing.
