UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI L. HALL, 0E PAEKEESBUEG, wEs'T VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 154,949, dated September 15, 1874 application filed July 25, 1874.
CASE B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI L. HALL, of Parkersburg, county of Wood and State of West Virginia, have invented an Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a specifica- 131011:
The object of this invention is to construct a four-leaved hinge, in which the liability 0f the breakage of any part, or the loosening of the screws by which the leaves are secured, is obviated, or at least greatly lessened, by combining with the ordinary leaves or straps two extra leaves or wings of peculiar construction, hereinafter described, which are knuckled to the pintle, and to be fastened, one against the side of the jamb which faces the edge of the door or shutter when closed, the other against the door or shutter edge. The leaves or straps are also knuckled to the pintle, and one attached to the outside of the jamb, at right angles to the leaf' or wing, just described as being also attached to the jamb, the other leaf or strap being secured to the outside of the door or shutter at right angles to the leaf or wing already attached to the edge. There is no novelty in the mere arrangement of the four leaves, but in the peculiar construction of the two leaves or wings, fitting one within the other, which I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings all the views, with one exception, are in perspective.
Figure l is a View of the entire hinge; Fig. 2 of the additional open leaf or wing A. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the leaves or straps D and E. Fig. 5 is a View of the additional and smaller leaf or wing U; while Fig. 6 is a sectional view, showing the hinge as attached.
AThe same letters of reference are used throughout.
.a is the opening or frame-work of the leaf or wing A. B refers to the pintle, while' the letters b b, c c, d, and e c represent the knuckles of the different leaves. I have. illustrated my improvement in connection with the ordinary strapfhinge, and to construct it I form the leaf or wing A like unto a frame,
can be forced loose.
f one side of which is left out, thus leaving two ends free, the upper one of which I knuckle to the pintle B at or near its top. The lower end I knuckle to the pintle B at or near its base. The smaller leaf or win g, C, is made of such relative size and shape that it will, after being knuckled to the pintleB between the knuckles b b of the open leaf or wing A, iit within the opening or fram e-work a of the leaf or wing A when closed, bel the opening or frame-work a shaped as it may. The leaves or straps D and E are knuckled 'to the pintle B, so that the leaf or strap D can be fastened to the outside of the door or shutter, and .the leaf or strap E secured to the outside of the jamb, both in such position as will permit the attaching of the open leaf or wing A to the side of the jamb facing the edge of the door or shutter, the open leaf A being at right angles tothe plane of the door when closed 3 also that the smaller wing or leaf C can be screwed against the edge of the door or shutter at right angles to the leaf or strap D, so that when thedoor is closed the smaller leaf or wing C will fit within the opening or framework a of the open leaf or wing A, thereby throwing the strain, which, in case of upward or downward prying or wrenching, must be upon the screws and the pintle B, nearly or quite upon the smaller wing or leaf C, which, fitting within the open leaf or wing A, renders it necessary that the door or shutter be cut or broken away before the hinges Therefore,
I claimas my invention- A four-leaved hinge, consisting of the leave or straps D and E, the open leaf or wing A, and the smaller leaf or wing C, all knuckled to the pintle B, in such manner that when the hinge is closed the smaller wing or leaf C will lit within the opening or frame-work a of the open leaf or wing A, all substantially as shown and described, for the purposes specified.
