UNITED STATES PATENT OEETEE.
ALBERT L. SWET'I, OF MEDINA, NEW YORK.
STAY-ROLLER FOR4 SLIDING DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,938, dated J'une 9, 1885.
Application led March 13, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom tm/ay concern.:
Medina, in the countyof Orleans and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stay-Rollers for Sliding Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of stayrollers employed for guiding the bottom or lower portion of sliding doors which are suspended by means of suitable hangers fastened to the top of the door.
The object of my invention is to provide the roller with an adjustable bracket or support, whereby the roller can be readily adu justed to doors of different thicknesses; and
my invention consists to that end of the improvements which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved roller and bracket applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan view, of the roller and bracket. Fig. 4 is avertical cross section of the same. Fig. 5 represents a modied construction of the bracket. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of a modified construction.
Like letters vof reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
y A represents the stay-roller, and b the jour nal-pin on which the roller is mounted.
O represents my improved bracket, which consists of two arms, c c, provided at their outer ends with interlocking knuckles through which the pin b passes. The roller is provided with a hub which rests on the upper knuckle, and the roller and arms are held together by the pin b, which is riveted or headed at its ends. In this manner the arms c c are hinged together, so that either arm can swing on the journal-pin b, and form with the other arm a greater or less angle, thereby holding the roller farther from or nearer the side of the building, as may be necessary, in order to cause'the roller to bear against the outer side of the door. The free end of each arm o is bent outward to form an ear, c,which is provided with an opening or screw-hole, d, through which passes a screw, f, whereby the bracket is firmly fastened to the building or other support, E.
F represents the lower portion of a sliding door, which is guidedbetween the roller A- the periphery of the roller is held against the outside of the door, and the arms' cof the lbracket are pressed toward each other until their ears c rest against the face of the building, when they are firmly secured in place by the screws f. If desired, one of the arms c may be provided with a screw-threaded or pointed end, g,which can be screwed or driven into the side of the building, as represented in Fig. 5. If desired, each arm c of the bracket can be hinged or pivoted separately to a support which carries the roller, as represented in Fig. 6.
By my improved bracket the roller is readily adjusted in position against the outer side ot' the door, and securely retained in a horizontal position and prevented from turning or twisting when the bracket is firmly fastened in place.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the roller A, of a supporting -bracket consisting ot' two arms made adjustable with reference to each other and both adapted for attachment to the build ing, whereby the roller can be adjusted toward or from the door, substantially as set forth. 2. The combination, with the roller A, provided with a journal-pin, b, of a bracket, C, composed of the arms c c, hinged to thejournal-pin and adapted for attachment to the building, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand this 9th day of March, 1885.
A. L. SWETT.

CARL F. GEYER, EDWARD WILHELM.
