lM PROVEM ENT IN GLOBE-STOVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,019, dated May 30, 1865.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HERRIOK, of Stuyvesant, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Globe-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. in which Figure l is an elevation of a globe-stove with my invention applied to it; Fig. 2, a vertical section of a portion of the same, taken in the line 00 :10, Fig. 1.

This invention consists in combining a dropdoor with a foot-rest in such a manner that the foot-rest will serve as a support for the door when the latter is open and prevent the breaking of -the hinges of the door when the latter is opened or allowed to drop. A dropdoor is by far the most convenient and desirable door for a globe-stove, but they are not generally applied to such stoves on account of the liability of the breaking of the hinges, a difficulty which is fully obviated by my invention.

A represents the body or main portion of a globe-stove, and B a flange or projection which is at the center of A, and extends horizontally around it. This flange or projection is commonly termed al'oot-rest,-" as it is designed as a support for the feet in warming the same. This class of stoves being generally used in public places, such an appendage is quite convenient and necessary.

0 represents a drop-door, which is at the upper part of the body A, just above the footrest B, and is hinged at its lower edge to A. In consequence of the door being above the foot-rest and at the part of A which inclines inward, and also hinged at its lower end, it will be seen that the door will have a tendency to remain closed by its own gravity, no catch or fastening being required to effect that result; and it will further be seen that when the door is pulled back and allowed to drop open the foot-rest B will serve as a support for it, and will prevent the hinges a being subjected to any undue strain, so as to be in danger. of

' breaking, as the upper part of the door 0 will strike the outer part of the foot-rest at a considerable distance from the hinges, so that there will not be much weight of door beyond B to act upon or strain the hinges. (See red lines, Fig. 2.)

Thus by simply combining the foot-rest and drop-door, as shown, I am enabled to use the latter without danger of having its hinges broken by the opening of the same.

I do not claim separately or in the abstract any of the parts herein shown and described; but

I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The drop-door O, in combination with a footrest. B, when applied to a globe-stove, in the manner substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
