EBENESER BARROWS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLATFORM-DOORS FOR STOVE-OVENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,013, dated January 8, 1878; application filed November 8, 1877. -Y
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBENESER BARRoWs,
of Brooklyn, in the county of Kin gs and State when opened, into a horizontal plane, forming a platform on which to place articles as they are introduced into or removed from the oven.
The liability of such doors to fall and break the hinges by which they are supported has rendered it necessary to make the hinges and lower portions ofthe door very heavy, to withstand the shocks to which they are subjected.
To obviate this difficulty, and to provide a door which will close automatically, is the object of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, A is the front of a stove or range, having` the usual opening B, communicating' with the oven, which extends below the oven-bottom O. Opposite the ovenbottoln, at the sides of the opening B on the front plate A, there are hooks or ears a, for receiving the pivots l b that project from the edges of the door l). The door, above the pivots, is made light either by tapering it or by making in it apertures and covering them with sheet metal. The lower portion of the door lls the opening in the stove-front below the oven-bottom, and is of sufcient weight to counterbalance the door and hold it in a ver tical position.
An offset, c, is made in the inner surface of the door, to receive the front edge of the ovenbottom when the door is let down into a horizontal position. By this arrangementthe upper portion of the door, when open, is brought into the same plane as the oven-bottom, and forms a platform for supporting articles to be introduced into or removed from the oven.
The pivots b are shaped on their lower and `outer surfaces so as to bring the center of gravity within the bearing of the pivot. A flange, d, projects from the stove-front over the edges of the lower portion of the door, to prevent the entrance of air to the flue under the oven, or the escape of ashes and dust therefrom.
This flange may be dispensed with, and the space in which the lower end of the door swings may be inclosed and separated from the line, thus avoiding the entrance of air to the flue, or the escape of ashes and dust from the `ilue when the door is opened.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An oven platforlndoor, weighted at its lower end, and provided with inclined pivots working in ears c, as shown and described, so that said door will close automatically, and remain closed Without a latch.
