T 0 all whom it m a-y concern Be it lmown that I, THOMAS RIWILSON, a citizen of the United States, residin at Driggs, in the county of Teton and btate of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in doors and more particularly to a door which is especially adapted for use in connection with heating devices for closing the fuel opening therein, although the improved door is so constructed that it may be advantageously used in connection with other openings in the heating device if found desirable.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which a door and a chute coact in providing a closure for the fuel opening in heating devices, such as stoves, and the like, and are so constructed and arranged with relation to the fuel opening and with each other that when the door is swung to an open position, the chute will be correspondingly moved to an active position to r ceive therein ashes, live coals, or the like, which may fall through the fuel opening in the heating device and upon the return of the door to closed position, the chute through its contact therewith will be moved to an inactive position.
Another object of the invention is to provide the closure member with a chute having formed thereon a transversely extending and inclined flange which when the chute is in active position serves as a deflector to prevent the material which passes through the chute passing between the bottom thereof and the bottom of the fuel opening in the heating device.
lVith these and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The preferred embodiment of the inventionhas been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications, within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a View in elevation of a portion of heating device and showing the improved door applied thereto and closing the fuel opening therein.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line 22 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig.3 is a horizontal transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, the door of the closure member being shown in open position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the door and chute.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 desi nates a portion of a heating device, such as a stove, or the like,'hav ing the fuel opening 2 therein adapted to be closed by the improved door 3 comprising a door 4 and a chute 5, said door being arranged above the chute 5 and hingedly connected with the heating device upon one side of the fuel opening 2 and provided with the usual fastening members 6 for holding the door f in closed position.
The chute 5 comprises a plate 7 having formed from one face thereof near the ends of the platelugs 8 which extend below one side edge of the plate and are pivotally connected with similar lugs 9 on the heating device 1 extending slightly above the bottom of the fuel opening 2 therein, said plate bein provided upon its other side with side mem ers 10 and 11 which extend transversely of the plate and are arranged near the ends thereof, said side members gradually decreasing in height toward the lower ideedge of said plate and provided at their larger ends with arcuate faces 12. and extending transversely thereof between the smaller ends of the side members 10 and 11 is an inclined flange 13 which when the chute 5 is in a closed position as shown in Fig. 2 in the drawings serves as a deflecting member to prevent material which passes through the chute passing between the inclined bottom wall of the fuel'opening 2 and the bottom side edge of the bottom plate 7.
The side member 11 has formed thereon a stop lug 14 which when the chute 5 is moved to a closed position by the door 4 is adapted to be brought into contact with the side of the heating device and limit the swinging movement of the chute within the fuel opening 2 of the heating device.
- tom plate 7 and extending transversely thereof and slightly above the top side edge of said bottom plate is a lip 16 which when the door 4 is in closed position is brought into contact with the outer face of said door through the contact of the door with the tapered extension 15 and serves to close the crack between the top side edge of the door and the bottom plate 7 and also to enable the chute 5 to be moved to a closed position when the door is opened by its contact therewith.
With the improved door connected with a heating device as shown in Fig. 1 in the drawing, it will be seen that when the door 4; is open, the door through its contact with the lip 16 will move the chute 5 to a closed position in which position it will be retained by the stop lug '14: so that ashes, cinders, or the like, which fall through the fuel open ing in the heating device will be caught in the chute and directed back into the heating device. a
As the door is moved to its closed or normal position, the door will be brought into contact with the tapered extension 15 which extends beyond the lip 16 on the bottom plate 7 and will cause the chute 5 to be turned about its pivotal connection with the heating device 1 to a closed position in which it will be retained by the fastening members 6 on the door and the tapered extension 15 on the chute.
The door is hinged to swing horizontally and the chute is hinged to swing vertically. The coengagement of the door between the lip 6 and the tapered extensions 15 on the sides of the chute 5, will, as previously inferred, cause the chute to swing to an open position when the door is opened. hen in such position, the chute serves as a means for properly directing fuel through the fuel opening of the heating device and because of the particular and peculiar shape thereof will prevent ashes or the like which may have accumulated on the door from falling on to the floor in which the heating device is positioned.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is: a
In combination with a heating device having a fuel opening, a door hinged for horizontal swinging and for closing the upper part of the opening, a chute hinged for vertical swinging for closing the lower part of the opening, means for limiting the outward swinging of the chute for retaining the same at an inclination with respect to the heating device, said chute including sides provided at their upper corners with tapered extensions, and the said chute having an outstanding lip upon its upper edge conforming with the extensions, pockets for the reception of the lower edge of the door, where- 'by when the said edge of the door is received therein and thedoor and chute closed, the opening of the door will influence the chute to an open position.
