Description

UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE FREDERICK BECKERT, JR., OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
llV IPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,702, dated December 7, 1875; application filed March 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK BECKERT, Jr., of the city of Allegheny, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Shutter- Hinges, of Which the following is a specification: v
My invention relates to an improvement in shutter-hinges; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of a bent pin With a hin ge having a recessed guide, vertical aperture, and socket, as hereinafter speeified, Whereby a simple and effective means is provided for looking said hinge When the shutter is in an open position.
Figure 1 in the accompanying drawings is a vertical section of my said hinge, with all its parts combined, in an open and bolted position, showing the hook and the eye of the hinge and my said bolt or pin. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the eye and pin A of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of the hook of Fig. l.
My hinge is constructed like those in general use, aside from my improvement.
The upper part of my hing'e has a vertical aperture near the side of the eye, as shown at B, Fig. 2, in which pin A of Fig. l operates to bolt the shutter when the same is open. When the shutter is swung open, the lower end of pin A will slide along upon the horizontal bearing-surface fl D' of the lower part of the hinge until it reaches a socket, G, formed therein, into which it drops by its own weight, thereby looking or bolting the hinge, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. When it is desired to close the shutter, said pin is raised from socket G by taking hold of its upper bent portion, thereby unlooking the hinge and permitting the Shutter to be swung to. Pin A has its upper part bent or formed like a hook, with the inner end of said hook slidn g in a groove, E, as shown by Fig. 1, which said groove is closed at the top to prevent the said fied. i
