COMBINED DROP-DOOR HINGE AND BRACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 17, 1906. Serial No. 348,342.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. LISTER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Covington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Drop-Door Hinge and Brace, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more articularly to combined hinges and braces or dro doors used upon bake oven doors for gaso ene or other stoves or upon any drop door.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, convenient, and economical combined hinge and support whereby a drop door is supported in horizontal position when My invention also consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, and in the device as an article of manufacture as herein set forth.
In the drawings which serve to illustrate my invention: Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the position of my device when the oven door is closed. Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the oven door supported in open or horizontal position by means of my device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 4 is a section on the line xx of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the blanks from which one of the hinge straps is formed. Fig. 6 is a similar view of a blank from which the other hinge strap is formed. Fig. 7 is a view of the lower end of Fig. 5 after it is bent into the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
I prefer to construct my invention substantially as follows: Straps 1 and 2 are secured together by pivot 3 to form a hinge and are ada ted to be secured in position upon the ho y 4 and door 5 respectlvely, of an oven by suitable fastenings 6. The pivot pin 3 passes through sleeves formed at the inner end of the member 2 and through a sleeve formed at the upper end of a raised portion of the member 1, which last named sleeve forms in effect a continuation of said raised portion and is disposed between the t provided with a pivot bearing 11 adapted to receive journal 12 of brace 10. I The other end of brace 10 is adapted to extend through slot 7 intochannel 8 and is, provided upon its end with catch 13 which is adapted to engage the guide-way 9 and limit the movement of said brace. The brace 10, journal 12, and catch 13 are preferably formed of one piece bent or shaped as shown. When the door is opened to horizontal osition catch 13 drops into engagement wit the lower end of the guide-way 9 and supports the door from further downward movement.
In the manufacture of this article I to construct hinge straps 1 and 2' of t e device out of sheet steel. I first cut blanks in the forms shown in Figs. 5 and 6 and then stamp and bend them to the positions shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 7. The end 14 in Fig. 5 is at one end of the outer wall of the channel 8, and is bent at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 5 or to the position shown in Fig. 7 and the flaps 15 are then lapped over said end to brace and support the end 14 thereby forming a firm and secure rest for the lower end of brace 10.
The brace 10 is preferably made of wire and bent at right angles near one end, the transverse member thus formed serving as a pivot with the free end of the stra 2. The other or free end of said brace 10 is ent at an obtuse angle depending upon the size and proportion of the straps 1 and 2, this obtuse end allowing the brace 10 to enter the lon itudinal slot 7 in the formed-up portion of t e strap 1. The part of the brace 10 between said obtuse bend and the free end is bent at right angles transversely to said central bend and serves to hold the free end of the brace 10 within the formed-up portion of the strap 1. The above described double bend near the free end of the brace 10 permits the strap to which said brace is attached to be raised to a vertical position, while still causing said free end to remain in its guide way formed between the formed-up portion of the strap 1 and the article to which said hinge is attached.
I claim:
A hinge comprising a stationary member and a movable member, said stationary member being formed from a section of sheet metal stam ed to form a central longitudinal channel liaving its outer wall provided with outwardly rojecting ends, one of said ends being provi ed with a flap on each refer side thereof, said last named end being turned inwardly and forming the bottom wall of said channel, each of said flaps being turned inwardly to engage the outer face of said last named end to provide a support for the same, the other end of said outer wall being bent inwardly to close the upper end of said channel and curled to form a knuckle, said movable member being formed from a single piece of sheet metal provided at one end with a pair of spaced knuckles, and at its opposite end with a single eye, said knuckle of the stationary member being seated in said space between the pair of knuckles of the movable member and being pivotally connected to said air of knuckles, said outer wall of the channe being slotted, and a brace having one end extending through said slot and engaging in said channel, and having its other end connected to said single eye of the movable member.
