Be it"knownthatl, Gnonon E. NEUBERTH, a citizen of. thefUnitedStates, and aresident of Newark, county of EsseX, and ,State I of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.

. This invention relates to an. improved hinge which permits a vertical movement of one part thereof in relation to the other, the

two parts of the hinge being thusadapted to allow the door to bera-ised to be removed from the. hinge entirely or to be. partly raised therefrom as in the case where this hinge is used inconjunction with the kind of hinge thatcis operated by handle to raise or lowera window or thelike to place it in and out of a groove or any -simila'rreceiving structure. H i r i r The invention is designedfto provide a hinge which secures the knuckles on a pintle without neccssarilygiving them any vertical movement whereby the pintle can be permanently headed or soy headed 'thatmit will not ride up out of place, as is very often'the case withpintles having a head covered wooden doors, is not present when only on *one end, so that thefivepoints of contact are always available to give a good bearing and to holdthe knuckles in proper POSltlOIlu a. q

The invention further provldesmeans for attaching the slide of the hingeito a door or like fixture so that the fasten ng means areconcealed whenth'e slide isin place, and

the slide can befurther" constructed to proride means fol-preventing lateral movement of the slide on the door or the like so as to remove excessive shearing strain from the screws that hold the door in place. This hinge is further adapted for use. in com junction with fireproof doorso'f metal or of wood covered with metal, since the slide is so arranged that it can'be bolted or otherwise fastened straight through'the door so that the danger of burning away from the screws, as is sometimes the casewlth iron this form of hinge is used with a bolt or any similar fastening that is passed through the slide and is fastened to the other side of the door. 1 a a The invention is illustrated in its preferred form in theaccompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the hinge. r In, the form shown the hinge leaves are hinged together oon a pintle, one hinge leaf 1.0 being of the usual butt type and having screw'holes11 bynmeans of which it is fastened to a frame or similar structure,

and being provided with knuckles 12 which are spaced apart to receive the knuckles 13 of aleaf, 14', the knuckles beingperforated and receiving a pintle 15, and since in; this type of hingeit isgnot necessary for the knuckles of oneleaf to move longitudinally along the pintle, a five-knuckle or a hinge can be used whichprovldes good bearing 1 and long contact, and the heads 16 can therefore be fastened to the ends of the pintle in the bottom because it is usual to withdrawthempintles vur'nvardso '1 as to separate the leaves of the hinge when the doonisto be removed, but in this construction it 1S not I necessary to remove the knuckles from the pintle so that the'pintle can be permanently put in place.

The leaf 1% is provided with a part 18 which can be disposed in any desired manher, but inthe' form shown it is formed at right-angles to the leaf 14 so as to form an L-shaped leaf and it is provided with a guideway 19 opening at the back thereof in a reduced portion 20 so as to retain the slide which fits therein by having the outermost .part of theguideway narrower than the inner portion. The slide 21 fits in the guideway 20 and slides vertically therein, the

slide 21 being prevented from having anyforward movement by reason of the guide, way not being put to the frontof the leaf so that a front wall 22 is formed opposite the front of the slide.
